| | Omer Avital Asking No Permission CD Omer Avital Discography of CDs
Bassist and composer Omer Avital assembled an especially intriguing line-up for ASKING NO PERMISSION, a live date recorded at New York City's famed jazz club Small's. The sextet features four saxophonists, creating an expansive, careening sound and plenty of options for soloing. Ironically, Avital's bass is still featured prominently, as is his songwriting (six of the album's seven cuts are his). ASKING NO PERMISSION is entrenched in bop and post-bop idioms, but the sensibility driving it is relentlessly fresh and contemporary.
Omer Avital: Omer Avital (double bass); Mark Turner, Charles Owens (tenor saxophone); Gregory Tardy, Ali Muhammed Jackson , Myron Walden.
Personnel: Gregory Tardy (flute, tenor saxophone); Myron Walden (alto saxophone); Charles Owens II (tenor saxophone); Ali Muhammed Jackson (drums).
Liner Note Author: Luke Kaven.
Recording information: Smalls, New York, NY (04/18/1996).Down Beat (p.70) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Knotty and fierce one moment, breezy and genial the next, Avital's tunes offer vista after vista." JazzTimes (p.70) - "Avital's music incorporates blowing into detailed designs, wherein any counterpoint might suddenly whisper in behind a shrieking soloist. The rewards are in the complex relationships between form and freedom." Asking No Permission Music Omer Avital Asking No Permission Songs Asking No Permission Review

Asking No Permission album
$12.89 Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s and '80s as a music educator. Dental problems resulted in Moncur only playing once in a great while in the 1990s. He had been in obscurity for quite awhile when he was contacted by arranger Mark Masters for the Exploration project. Fortunately ...

$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. | | Billy Taylor Urban Griot CD (2001)
Asking No Permission music CDs
$15.75 The ageless Dr. Billy Taylor describes himself as an urban griot ("In African tradition, a historian, a master musician, an educator, a storyteller," according to the pianist in his informative liner notes) and proceeds to prove the point with his moving suite, which was commissioned by Dr. & Mrs. Clifford Wharton and later dedicated to their son, Clifford Wharton III, after his untimely death. With bassist Chip Jackson and drummer Winard Harper, Taylor's 11 pieces convey a variety of messages and moods. The medley "Local Color/Can You Dig It?" alternates between a funky strut and an infectious dance groove. Dr. Taylor invites the listener to briskly waltz along with "Reclamation." "Conversion" is a feature for Jackson's considerable chops, while Harper is the focus of "Like a Heartbeat," a piece that ...
| | Chris Connor CD (1956) (Import) United Kingdom
Asking No Permission songs
$11.79 Chris Connor's classic self-titled album returns as a part of the Jazz Masters Series. Among the 12 tracks are the hits "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Anything Goes."
CHRIS CONNOR was the quintessential '50s jazz vocalist Chris Connor's 1956 debut for Atlantic after a two-year stint on the short-lived California label Bethlehem. Like 1954's SINGS LULLABY OF BIRDLAND, her very first LP, CHRIS CONNOR is somewhat schizophrenically divided between rhapsodic ballads and boisterous uptempo numbers, perhaps reflecting ...
