Tony Monaco, an excellent organist who is happy to acknowledge the influence of Jimmy Smith (who he pays tribute to on his "I'll Remember Jimmy"), also has a personal sound and a swinging style of his own. Teamed with the fine bop guitarist Bruce Forman, drummer Adam Nussbaum, and occasionally saxophonist Byron Rooker, Monaco romps through a variety of jazz standards and a few basic originals. Although it seems odd that he performs both "Indiana" and "Donna Lee" (the latter is based on the former), both versions are enjoyable. Fans of swinging and soulful jazz organists will find much to enjoy in Tony Monaco's music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Leni Stern Kindness Of Strangers CD (2000)
East To West CD music
$10.25 Whenever a jazz instrumentalist takes up non-jazz singing, he/she is bound to be denounced as a sellout -- just ask George Benson, George Duke, and Patrice Rushen, all of whom were routinely lambasted in the jazz press when they made commercial singing a high priority. But commercial doesn't necessarily mean bad, and those artists continued to provide quality music even though instrumental jazz was no longer their primary focus. Similarly, Leni Stern first made her mark as a guitar-playing jazz instrumentalist, but favors pop/rock and pop-folk singing on Kindness of Strangers. While her instrumental albums often inspired comparisons to Pat Metheny, the comparisons that this CD brings to mind include Joni Mitchell, Julia Fordham, and Sarah McLachlan. Even for those who have a very liberal and broad definition of the word jazz, this isn't a jazz album -- it's mildly jazzy pop/rock, pop-folk, and adult alternative, and Stern's role is that of a singer/songwriter who happens to play guitar. So don't expect a lot of extended, improvised guitar solos. What one can expect is thoughtful, if imperfect, singing. Although Stern grew up in Germany, her English is generally quite good -- not perfect, but quite ...

While the RZA is the Wu-Tang Clan's beat-driver and Ol' Dirty Bastard garners the most attention with his high-profile dementia, Method Man is arguably the group's fulcrum. One of the collective's first hits was entitled "Method Man," and he was the first to bust out of the solo gates ...
| | 808 State 808:88:98 (Navarre) CD (1998)
East To West CD music
$10.05 808 State holds a position of royalty among early house and techno pioneers. Endlessly inventive, while never losing sight of their break-fueled modus operandi, 808 State was successful both artistically and within the club culture (they reportedly performed live before 14,000 people in Manchester in 1988). Evidence of their innovations is packed into this superb 16-track retrospective. Elements of ambient, hip-hop, rock, soul, and jazz are woven through the relentless dance beats contained herein.
"Pacific," the set's opener, glides along with a super-smooth electro vibe, as does the charming "Olympic" (with its simulated pitch-bending flute sound). The music often has an aggressive edge, as on the pounding "Cubik," and the hip-hop showcase "The Only Rhyme That Bites" (featuring rapper MC Tunes). 808 State were big on guest vocalists; Bjork (well before her solo career took off) graces the spooky and elegant "Ooops;" James Dean Bradfield (from Manic Street Preachers) takes a turn on "Lopez;" and UB40 gives a reggae feel to "One In Ten." Each of these cameos lends color and variety to the already genre-popping creations spun out of 808 State's techno-acid sensibility. For all but completists, 808:88:98 will be a definitive look at the work of this landmark electronica act.
Celebrating, as the title hints at, ten years of work together, 808:88:98 makes the brilliant case for 808 State's place as a modern techno pioneer. Time has shown that while a rougher breakbeat approach ended up defining much of dance in the broad ...
