Audio Mixer: Jay Newland. Recording information: Benette Studio (06/21/2004-06/25/2004). Cuban alto saxophonist Yosvany Terry Cabrera's recording debut as a leader is an impressive affair. A young man already well in command of his main instrument, Cabrera's stunning palette of colors in his original compositions is wide-ranging. One of the many highlights is the lively, often humorous "El Burlón" (The Joker), which even tosses in a tongue-in-cheek quote from Thelonious Monk. The tension within the insistent "This Is It" features compelling solos by Cabrera and trumpeter Avishai Cohen. Bassist Yunior Terry Cabrera (the leader's brother) contributed "The Crying" and introduces it with a moody bass solo that sets the tone for his haunting ballad. The rhythmically complex "Subversive" showcases guitarist Mike Moreno, while the leader works a bit of Charlie Parker into his solo. It is clear that Latin jazz will continue to progress with younger-generation players like Yosvany Terry Cabrera leading the way in the 21st century. ~ Ken DrydenDown Beat (p.82) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] diverse, sure-handed record that, as the title suggests, synthesizes a wide array of ingredients into a single, convincing vision." | | Woodstock 1 CD (1970) (Import) Remastered; Germany
Metamorphosis
$37.59 Digitally remastered music from the original master tapes. Features 21 tracks from the likes of Joan Baez, Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Country Joe & The Fish, Crosby, Stills & Nash, & many more. Warner.
This concert album serves as the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's classic document of the legendary Woodstock music festival in 1969, with live performances by Country Joe & the Fish, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Remastered. Officially it was "Music from the Original Soundtrack [of Michael Wadleigh's documentary feature film Woodstock] And More," but the triple-LP (later double-CD) Woodstock was really rock's first "coffee table" album. Bought by millions but not really listened to that often, it's amid a flood of wrong notes and the inherent flaws in recording live in front of hundreds of thousands of people in a temporary, makeshift venue. It was more satisfying for journalists and scholars than for ordinary listeners, what with its artists represented by one or two tracks and no more than 15 minutes of music by any single performer. But it did sell in the millions (and yielded a follow-up, Woodstock 2), fueled by the mystique surrounding the event and the release of the accompanying movie, and at times it did have a certain amount of energy to help drive it. There were some ...
