Personnel: Tom Scott (tenor saxophone); Tom Scott; Duane Burno (bass instrument); Willie Jones , Willie Jones III (drums); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet); Jay Ashby (trombone); Gil Goldstein (piano).
Arranger: Tom Scott.
The last 20 years of this legendary saxman's four-decade solo career have mostly featured fun and funky, energetic pop or smooth jazz dates, with one exception, 1992's straight-ahead date Born Again. Not surprisingly, despite all the solid work he's put forth during that time, that date is the only one that's been truly respected by traditional jazz critics. But now, making his MCG debut with Bebop United, Tom Scott makes a special return to his bebop roots on a live recording -- featuring cohorts like Randy Brecker, Gil Goldstein, and Phil Woods -- performed at the Manchester Craftsman's Guild in Pittsburgh in May 2002. The date is essentially Born Again fashioned for a live setting, but with the addition of Woods upon a recommendation from the Guild. Scott wrote special arrangements for their two altos on "Silhouettes," Chick Corea's "Tones for Jones Bones," and "Close View." For Scott, alternately blowing heavy and tapping into the subtleties of these eight pieces -- including three Scott originals plus classics from Wayne Shorter ("Children of the Night") and Cannonball Adderley ("Sack o' Woe") -- takes him back to his roots when he recorded two LPs for Bob Thiele's Impulse! label during the late '60s when he was only 19 to 20 years old. The gig itself grew out of a handful of dates he did with the Born Again instrumentation at L.A.'s Catalina Bar & Grill. The results are engaging all the way and are sure to please fans who have been dying for him to return to bop. The friends he made in his early L.A. Express days and from his years on GRP and Windham Hill Jazz should broaden their horizons and take a listen as well. ~ Jonathan WidranJazzTimes (p.97) - "Guest altoist Phil Woods offers his stellar and ageless bebop on three tracks. Brecker shines consistently in his solos, and pianist Gil Goldstein demonstrates an impressive ability to create fascinatingly long melodic lines..."

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Excellent "traditional jazz" sound
This is a really good recording. Tom Scott being the headliner, I was a little dissapointed with his playing in this genre.I think of Tom Scott as more of a pop sax player(no offense Tom) and I think I mainly bought this CD for the Phil Woods element. He was a role model for style for me as I was learning to improvise in my early years. The ensemble playing however is very impressive and reminiscent of 60's jazz! I recommend the recording to jazz enthusiasts

4 stars Excelent!!
Tom Scott not able to play jazz?? cīmon! Tom is a great jazz player in his own way with miles and years of ride. This CD is a impressive sample of fact. Great solos and arrangments. Phil Woods is a absolute master with the add point of a history living legend. My favorite song: Close View Carlos

4 stars Tom Scott can do both
I totally disagree with anyone saying that Tom Scott cannot do both Jazz & Funk. He is so at home with both. This album is not just about him as everyone gets a fair shout with the solos. My only minor neagative is that the solos aren't long enough. Otherwise, a great album.

DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-TWO is the twenty-second in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers".
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums).
Recorded live at Kings Beach Bowl, Lake Tahoe, California on February 23 & 24, 1968.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
There are many reasons the Grateful Dead are cultural icons; primary among them is their uncanny ability to stretch the boundaries and test the limits concerning any preconceptions or expectations from their music. Dick's Picks, Vol. 22 examines a band wrought with experimentation fuelled by the vigor of youth. This double-disc release compiles four sets -- two nights, two sets per night -- documented at the Kings Beach Bowl bowling alley in Kings Beach, Lake Tahoe, on ...
