On 2006's DISNEY STANDARDS, pop vocalist Steve Tyrell offers up a charming set of tunes from vintage Mouse House films. Although Tyrell's gravelly voice may seem like an unlikely match for the melodies from animated classics such as DUMBO and PINOCCHIO, the project works to wonderful effect, allowing the vocalist to imbue the songs with plenty of emotion. Trumpeter Chris Botti joins Tyrell on a delicate reading of "When You Wish Upon a Star" (from PINOCCHIO), and Dr. John sits in on an easy-going rendition of "You've Got a Friend in Me" (from TOY STORY). (The latter is a slightly strange pairing since Tyrell's voice echoes Dr. John's own singing style). Other highlights include "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (a dreamy, piano-driven version of the beloved CINDERELLA song) and "The Bare Necessities" (a smooth, orchestral take on the JUNGLE BOOK original). For fans of both Disney movies and Tyrell, this disc is sure to entertain. Now this is a box set. The Watersons are the true first family of Great Britain when it comes to traditional Celtic folk music. This four-CD, one-DVD deluxe package is a grand overview of the various Waterson incarnations over a couple of generations. The box traces the careers of Lal, Mike, and Norma Waterson through their earliest groups, like the Folksons with Pete Ogley and John Harrison in 1964. "Blood Red Roses," is a performance from a live gig, and was previously unreleased. It is true that it's only a fragment of the song, but it does offer, even if just a snippet, a view of the entire Waterson universe as it was contained even then. The Red Hot Chili Peppers' eighth studio album finds the California foursome exploring the more melodic freeways of harmony and texture, contrasting the gritty, funky side streets of their early days. Luckily, with this more sophisticated sound, the Peppers have not sacrificed any of their trademark energy or passions for life, universal love, and (of course) lust.
