On its 2006 self-titled debut, Witch offers up a weighty slab of classic, first-wave doom metal. Although the New England-based quartet's membership includes J. Mascis, the Dinosaur Jr. frontman sticks to drum duty on this fierce seven-song set, leaving the blistering leads to Asa Irons, who, along with vocalist Kyle Thomas, is also a part of the psych-folk ensemble Feathers. While Thomas's singing bears the influences of Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, Irons's six-string work takes more than a page from Tony Iommi's playbook, with crushingly ominous riffs alternating with wailing solos (see the lumbering "Soul of Fire" and the doom-laden "Rip Van Winkle"). Obvious inspirations aside, the tunes on WITCH pack enough punch to stand on their own merits, meaning devoted followers of unapologetically heavy rock have yet another band to worship.Uncut (p.129) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t manages to be forceful and intricate in equal amounts." Magnet (p.103) - "It features Led-Zeppelin-style middle-earth lyrics and a vocalist who wails like Robert Plant." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Singer Kyle Thomas's androgynous vocals -- evoking Plant and Bolan at their most hippy-dippy -- perfectly suit lyrics awash in patchouli mysticism..." Witch album
$6.49 On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful.
As always, the band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Witch CD music
$13.55 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the great but underexposed Budgie. If one didn't know for sure that Firewood was a 2005 recording, it would be easy to assume that the disc was recorded around 1969 or 1970 -- even the production is totally retro. And while Witchcraft's melodic offerings aren't the least bit groundbreaking, they are enjoyable; this derivative outing ...
| | Pentagram Day Of Reckoning CD (1987)
Witch music CDs
$10.05 Having waited more than a decade to finally wax their excellent debut, Pentagram wasted little time in preparing its follow-up, 1987's even more accomplished Day of Reckoning. Though it was dedicated to Blue Cheer, the album is arguably the most faithful tribute to the original spirit of Black Sabbath ever committed to tape. Vocalist Bobby Liebling always recalled Ozzy Osbourne with his uncultured, barely adequate vocal delivery, and even borrows a few lyrics on "Evil Seed" and "Madman." But on Day of Reckoning, it's guitarist Victor Griffin's ability to replicate Tony Iommi's guitar tone and playing style which is nothing short of amazing. In fact, on the incredible ...
| | Sword Age Of Winters CD (2006)
Witch songs
$9.49 Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize it as an unrepresentative anomaly) or obvious (everyone else) when discussing a genre that's spent the bulk of its 35-year history on the absolute fringe of rock culture. If that isn't "alternative," well, what is? In any case, glorifying heavy metal's prototypical qualities is exactly what the Sword is all about, and their 2006 debut, Age of Winters, sees them joining California's High on Fire, Sweden's Witchcraft, and Australia's Wolfmother (to name but a few) at the forefront of what's gradually become known in the mid-'00s as the "heritage" or "retro-metal" movement. No, not stoner rock -- that's sooo ten years earlier! The only thing the Sword and their ilk have in common with most '90s stoner rockers is recognizing that all heavy metal empires are sprung from the Black Sabbath cornerstone, and the token signs can be readily heard in these songs' ominous ...

| | Seven Nations And Now It's Come To This CD (2002)
Witch CD music
$15.05 Why anyone would hire full-time bagpipe and fiddle players and use them only for subtle background coloring is unclear, but that's the case on Seven Nations' sixth album. The band's first release on a major indie is an inoffensive, often bland sub-Waterboys affair, very definitely led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Kirk McLeod, who wrote every track. The bagpipes that should infuse a distinctive sound only appear on a few tracks, where they are less than completely successful in making an impact on the overall approach. Without listening closely, it is difficult to distinguish the pipes, since they are often sunk so far down in the commercial mix as to be nearly inaudible. But when they take the lead on "Up to Me," spearheading the charge of chunky electric guitar and sawing fiddle, the band's sound solidifies. Unfortunately, all the unique instrumentation won't compensate for the weak songs that ultimately ground this album. McLeod aims for epics of the Big Country variety, but is hamstrung by trite lyrics and a voice that sounds forced as it attempts to reach for the rafters. Far better is the violin-led instrumental "Jump Start," which avoids words and vocals altogether and works up a slick but rather funky Celtic-rock groove. The best is saved for the closing track, the appropriately titled "Last Call," which thrusts the bagpipes and fiddle into a Pogues-ish punk whirlpool. Finally everyone sounds enthused, an emotion not felt through the majority of the album. This band deserves stronger ...
| | Fu Manchu (Godzilla's) Eatin' Dust CD (2004)
Witch music CDs
$12.89 Fu Manchu are never at a loss for new material, as it seems like each year the group has either a new full-length or EP to offer fans. And one of their more popular mini-albums is (Godzilla's) Eatin' Dust, a compilation that merges two earlier EPs, 1997's Godzilla and 1999's Eatin' Dust, together as one (hence the compilation/reissue's title). As with all their releases, Fu Manchu lay it on hard and heavy throughout, including such eventual fan favorites as "Eatin' Dust" and "Mongoose" as well as a killer cover of Blue Öyster Cult's stoner rock classic "Godzilla." For some bands, EPs consist of throwaway tracks that weren't strong enough for inclusion in full-length albums. But as evidenced by (Godzilla's) Eatin' Dust, Fu Manchu's odds and ends out-rock most of the modern-day competition. ~ Greg Prato
After releasing Fu Manchu's remake of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" as a 10-inch vinyl single in 1998 (yes, some labels were still providing vinyl in the late 1990s), Man's Ruin released the headbangers' Eatin' Dust CD in February 1999. Greatly influenced by the heavy metal of the early '70s, this CD offers a stripped down, garage-like approach to classic metal and steers clear of pop gloss. Some of the production techniques give away the fact that Eatin' Dust is a late-'90s recording, and it would be inaccurate ...
| | Cannibal Corpse Vile CD (1996) Bonus Track; Japan
Witch songs
$27.39 VILE is Cannibal Corpse's first record with singer George Fisher, who replaced Chris Barnes.
The Japanese edition of Cannibal Corpse's VILE comes with one bonus cut.
Death metal wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Buffalo's Cannibal Corpse, one of the most musically brutal and lyrically extreme metal acts ever. The band's 1996 album, VILE--a landmark in the genre, as it was the first death metal album to hit the Billboard charts--gets the deluxe reissue treatment here in celebration of Metal Blade Records' 25th anniversary. In addition to the digitally remastered original album--which, decades later, still shocks with its pummeling riffs, blast beats, scorched-earth vocals, and disgustingly gory lyrics (see "Orgasm Through Torture")--the package also contains an 18-track live DVD and expanded liner notes.
Released on Metal Blade in 1996, Vile is the first Cannibal Corpse recording to feature vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. The band had built up a considerable following within the death metal community, and that success continued as Fisher brought a vocal dynamism and character that livened up the band's six-year-old sound. Fisher's ability to match the musical intensity and rhythm of Vile's more complicated assemblages of riffs created a more sophisticated yet equally tortuous essence. Both the album art and song titles -- while gruesome to the extreme -- were somewhat toned down when compared to earlier Cannibal Corpse efforts. The band members might have been put off by so many accusations of novelty, and intent on proving their ...
