Despite a promising start with the inflammatory mantra of "Intro" and an eyebrow-raising cover of Joy Division's "Interzone," Warrior Soul's second album, Drugs, God and the New Republic, quickly slides into mediocrity. Unfocused and obviously rushed, the record proved that without the musical muscle to back them up, Kory Clarke's angst-ridden sociopolitical anthems offered little more than pretentious posturing. The disappointments range from the repetitive boredom of the title track to the bad metal of "Jump for Joy" to the palpably forced punk rock façade of "Real Thing" and "Man Must Live as One." Only the manic "Rocket 88," the desperately heartfelt "Hero," and the vibrant chorus of "The Wasteland" offer rare glimpses of genuine emotion, and ultimately, this album proved a holding pattern that failed to capitalize on Warrior Soul's initial potential. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Another band that breaks the stereotype of what heavy metal should sound like, they are very political and strong throughout, yet are still a band with a bright future in store. ~ John Book

Warrior Soul: Kory Clarke (vocals); John Ricco (guitar); Pete McClanahan (bass); Mark Evans (drums).

Drugs, God And The New Republic Music Drugs, God And The New Republic Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) classic This is a great album. The lead singer has a great voice and the politically laced lyrics reveal intelligence. My favorite songs are drugs, god, and the new republic, the answer, jump for joy, my time, real thing, hero, the wasteland, and children of the winter. In other words, most of the album kicks ass. Just another example of a group that deserved a better fate. Submitted by john (Wixom, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
They were ahead of there time. Hard to believe they could top their first album - but they did. A little known band that stands the test of time. Submitted by DEZ (( Bronx, NY )) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Drugs, God And The New Republic music CDs
$42.05 The anticipated release of the American metal group's 2002 release; includes "Z Overture" and "Saturday." 2002, Japanese import.
With quite a few of the '80s-era glam-metal acts trying to come back with completely different approaches and styles come the 21st century, Chicago power pop vets Enuff Z'nuff continue to specialize in what they do best. And as evidenced by such latter-day releases as 2002's Welcome to Blue Island, they can still whip up a Beatlesque melody with no problem. The group continues to be led by the underrated songwriting duo of Donnie Vie and Chip Znuff, whose pop sensibilities are still keen on such standout tracks as "Good Times (Are Hard to Find)" and the upbeat ditty "Zentemental Journey" (which is preceded by a sitar-heavy Middle Eastern piece, "Z Overture," which is equal parts "Kashmir" and "Within You Without You"). For the hardcore fan, try to find the import version of Welcome to Blue Island, which includes four bonus tracks -- one being a surprise cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies" (after all, this was the same band that was almost single-handedly responsible for preventing the glam-metal scene from infesting any further). ~ Greg Prato

| | Gabor Szabo Bacchanal/1969 (Dreams) CD (1968) (Import) United Kingdom
Drugs, God And The New Republic songs
$15.65 BACCHANAL/1969 is a reissue of two late 1960s releases by psychedelic jazz composer Gabor Szabo and features the tracks "Three King Fishers," "Love Is Blue," and a cover of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman."
This two-fer includes two late-'60s recordings guitarist Gabor Szabo released on his own Skye label (his partners were Gary McFarland and Cal Tjader). As an m.o. in his career as a leader, Szabo found not only commercial viability in covering the pop tunes of the day -- as opposed to the dusty standards that were the norm for jazz pickers at the time -- but creative expression as well. The first, Bacchanal, was the last to feature the band that had previously recorded for Impulse! The group included drummer Jim Keltner, guitarist Jim Stewart, bassist Louis Kabok, and percussionist Hal Gordon (Keltner and Kabok would remain for 1969). Szabo had been raising eyebrows ever since his tenure with Chico Hamilton for his blend of jazz and gypsy styles, but his Impulse! recordings, most notably Spellbinder, Jazz Raga, and Sorcerer, put him in a league of his own as he added pop, rock, and Indian modal and Middle Eastern scales to his intoxicating brew. After leaving Impulse!, Szabo moved toward the mainstream but in a decidedly angular way, moving through the hits of the day with exotic and often poignant and canny arrangements, the center of which was always his scintillating, mysterious guitar tone. Bacchanal is the stronger of the two recordings, but ...
