(1 Customer Review)
Protégé of Venice scene godfathers Suicidal Tendencies -- their first album was released on their Suicidal label -- Venice Beach skatepunks Beowulf were often thought of as simply an ST retread. And to be honest, this reissue of the band's first two albums doesn't do much to refute that notion. These 26 songs are pretty good early hardcore that occasionally shades into fairly awesome -- the clattering in the background of "Tool the Jewel" sounds like it was lifted direct from Agent Orange's "Living in Darkness," but it's a cool effect nonetheless -- but the Suicidal Tendencies comparisons are pretty inescapable. The compilation is pretty spotty: the cover of G.G. Allin's "Drink Fight Fuck" is rather pointlessly faithful, the nearly five-minute cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" is a joke that stops being funny within the first 90 seconds, and some of the tracks from second album Lost My Head are starting to shade into the same metalhead territory that ruined Suicidal Tendencies. This two-fer CD is essential for Beowulf fans, even if more general fans of SoCal punk might find it less so. ~ Stewart Mason

Beowulf / The Re-Releases songs
$12.39 1983's HARD found drummer Hugo Burnham replaced by a drum machine. Additionally, the album's production substituted the band's previous angularity for a lush, polished sound augmented by backing singers and synthesizers, which longtime fans found hard to take. But both "Is It Love" and "Womantown" have a smoky mystery, while "A Man With a Good Car" is an energetic backward glance at the band's post-punk roots.
Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. ...
| | Miaow When It All Comes Down CD (2003) Import
Beowulf / The Re-Releases album
$14.29 Miaow is one of those curious groups whose mystique and influential sway greatly overshadowed their meager recorded output. Between 1985-1987, the band contributed "Sport Most Royal" to NME's original C-86 compilation, recorded two sessions with legendary British DJ John Peel, and released an unforgettable single on Factory Records. If these feats don't solidify Miaow's old-school indie cred, vocalist Cath Carroll also wrote for NME, married Big Black guitarist Santiago Durango, and went on to be the fanboy fantasy of TeenBeat's Mark Robinson. But the best thing about Miaow's legacy? They actually deserve it. Songs like "Did She?," "Grocer's Dead Daughter," and "Following Through" sound so impossibly fresh, it's difficult to believe they aren't 21st century recordings from Slumber Party, Belle & Sebastian, or the Shermans. No matter what the genre was eventually called -- twee, indie pop, shambling, etc. -- Miaow's effortless melodies, bittersweet lyrics, and complete lack of musical pretense contributed ...

Beowulf / The Re-Releases album
$7.59 Despite their long-haired, pretty-boy image and the occasional hot guitar solo, Autograph was one of the more mainstream hard rock bands associated with the L.A. metal scene. And though it spawned only one hit (the MTV favorite "Turn Up the Radio"), their 1984 debut, Sign in Please, is a solid collection of hook-heavy tunes. Singer Steve Plunkett has a knack for catchy choruses. He leads the band through a number of memorable melodic rockers, among which ...

Beowulf / The Re-Releases music CDs
$10.75 Originally released in 2003 by tiny Japanese label Amputated Vein, All Shall Perish's debut effort Hate, Malice, Revenge would be given a worldwide reissue almost two years later by metal superpower Nuclear Blast. This vote of confidence, as well as the group constantly in-demand as touring partners by the likes of Brujeria, Krisiun, and even hardcore heroes Agnostic Front, would seem like undeniable points in their ...

$12.99 John Cowan can flat out sing, so the fact that he's made a superior Christmas album should not come as a surprise.
