Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Curtis Fuller (trombone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Art Blakey (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 11, 1964. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bob Cranshaw (upright bass); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Curtis Fuller (trombone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Art Blakey (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Michael Cuscuna; Bob Blumenthal. Photographer: Francis Wolff. It seems strange that the music on this CD was not released initially until 1980. Trumpeter Lee Morgan had had an unexpected hit with "The Sidewinder," so his more challenging recordings were temporarily put aside. As it turns out, this was one of Morgan's better sets from the 1960s and he had gathered together quite an all-star cast: altoist Jackie McLean, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Art Blakey. They perform "Rigormortis," McCoy Tyner's "Twilight Mist," and three of the trumpeter's originals, including the title cut. The advanced hard bop music still sounds fresh decades later despite its initial neglect. ~ Scott Yanow TOM CAT is one of the amazing trumpeter Lee Morgan's many excellent '60s sides for Blue Note. Still just 26 when the album was recorded, Morgan is in firm control of these exuberant proceedings and his trumpet playing is always inspired and frequently dazzling. Listening to Morgan and alto sax great Jackie McLean go head to head on these five extended numbers should be enough to satisfy any fan of hard-core hard bop. And the rest of the cast isn't too shabby either: Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Art Blakey, Morgan's former boss in the Jazz Messengers, on drums. $8.39 Live Recording
Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (electric violin, violectra, bells, piano); Allan Zavod (piano, electric piano, clavinet, organ, synthesizer); Allan Holdsworth, Daryl Stuermer (electric guitar); Ralphe Armstrong (electric bass); Steve Smith (drums, percussion). Recorded in June and July, 1977. Consistently imaginative, Enigmatic Ocean is one of Jean-Luc Ponty's finest accomplishments. The French violinist recorded his share of fusion gems during the 1970s, and this album is at the top of the list. Often aggressive but sometimes reflective and moody, this CD is as unpredictable as it is adventurous. Ponty has plenty of room to stretch out, let loose, and blow, and electric guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Daryl Stuermer contribute some inspired solos as well. Also quite impressive is the insightful ...

| | Take 6 Doo Be Doo Wop Bop! CD (1988)
Tom Cat
$13.29 Not just a cappella fans but the whole musical world perked up their ears when six young singers transformed the gospel world with their jazz arrangements. The beautiful harmonies and sophisticated arrangements immediately set a standard which has been endlessly copied ever since. Within a single song can frequently be found elements of jazz, soul, rock and R&B on a gospel base. It is no wonder that these singers were tapped to be the winners of two Grammy Awards for their first recording! It is a must for any a cappella collection! Remember this was 1988 and they set the standard by which other great harmony groups such as Boyz II Men were measured and continue to be so judged.
Take 6: Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Mervyn E. Warren, Alvin Chea (vocals). Additional personnel: David Humphries (finger snaps, sound effects). Recorded at Digital Recorders, Nashville. The vocal sextet's debut release was critically acclaimed, capturing Grammy Awards in both the jazz and gospel categories. In a diverse ...
