Borrowed Angel
$13.79 Rhonda Vincent's 17 albums have seen her journey from bluegrass to country and back to bluegrass again over the course of a career that began when she was just five. Back Home Again solidifies here position in the bluegrass community, which is where she truly belongs -- her voice and musical skill never really fit well into the world of commercial country music. Vincent's greatest talent is as a vocalist, and her twangy sound is right at home on this album. On Back Home Again, she also plays mandolin on most tracks. She chooses her songs well, coming up with a collection of faith-tinged tunes about love and struggle, but at times her rendition of them seems a little fast and frantic. Bluegrass has a history of lightning-fast solos and chaotic jumbles of strings, but there are places on this album where a little more clarity could be achieved by simplification or a slight slow-down. Still, though, there are many highlights on the album: the touching "Little Angels," a cover of the great Dolly Parton song "Jolene," and "Out of Hand," which is performed with her father, Johnny, and brother, Darrin, recreating the sound that they had when they performed together during Rhonda's childhood as the Sally Mountain ...
| | Ray Wylie Hubbard Delerium Tremolos CD (2005)
Borrowed Angel
$13.05 It seems strange that folks like Ray Wylie Hubbard once lived such wild lives but have been able to make solid comebacks later in life. Strange, because Hubbard, on Delirium Tremolos, sounds as good as he ever has. Better yet, the album has a nice, mellow country sound, and Hubbard has discarded, for the time being, his penchant for preachy, comic songs. It doesn't hurt that the album's been produced by Gurf Morlix, nor that he's joined by great harmony singers like Patty Griffin and Eliza Gilkyson. Hubbard's choice of songs are solid too, combining deep but real lyrics ("And the rock and roll gypsies are ridin' tonight/ On the carnival strips they'll stay") with good melodies and hooks. The first three songs, "The Beauty Way," "Rock and Roll Gypsies," and "Dallas After Midnight," are all keepers, and a beautiful start to a solid album. Other good songs include "This Mornin' I Am Born Again," a gospel-flavored hymn that even pagans should dig. Delirium ...

| | Classic Songs Of Ray Price CD (2007)
Borrowed Angel
$11.49 If you're a country artist who had a handful of hits in the '50s and '60s, there's an excellent chance someone has persuaded you to re-record your hits for another label so you can earn a new payday from the old material, and the new label has a proven commodity in their catalog. Ray Price is only one of the dozens of noteworthy acts who've taken the bait and re-cut their hits, and The Classic Songs of Ray Price features 18 tunes, most major hits for Price in the past, that the Cherokee Cowboy has recorded anew with a band of Nashville session cats anchored by the great pedal steel player Buddy Emmons and fiddler Buddy Spicher. The players generally echo the mood and approach of the original hit versions of the tunes, if not the letter of the arrangements, so honky tonk numbers like "Crazy Arms" and "City Lights" maintain their barroom 2-step feel, while the slicker, string-laden numbers like "For the Good Times" and "I Won't Mention It Again" remain polished and heavily orchestrated. If the production here lacks a bit of the detail and panache of the original recordings of these tunes, these sessions have still been put together with care and love for the material, and most importantly of all, Ray Price is on hand to sing these songs. Price's voice on these re-cuts shows a bit more wear than it did on the hit versions, but his instrument is still in impressive shape, and he can still kick up ...

| | Essential Jimmie Rodgers CD (1997)
Borrowed Angel
$8.99 Many country music purists would say that all of Jimmie Rodgers' recordings are essential, and it's difficult to argue with their logic, particularly considering that the Singing Brakeman's recording career lasted six short years. But everyone has to start somewhere, and the 20-track THE ESSENTIAL JIMMIE RODGERS is the best possible single-disc ...

| | Willie & Lobo Manana CD (2003)
Borrowed Angel
$13.45 The shadowy, sunrise-laden cover of the flamenco guitar/gypsy violin duo's ninth disc reflects the playful spirit of the personalities behind one of world music's most original phenomenons of the last decade. There's always a lightheartedness in their songs, reflective of the Mexican surf region where their partnership began. Yet when it comes to blending traditional elements with modern percussive sensibilities, and showing the rhythmic possibilities of the violin, the tandem is not only serious, but innovative. Manana is one of their most diverse discs, inspired by the experiences they've had playing their gypsy joy for audiences all around the world. Thus, there's the lazy days on Mexican and Hawaiian beaches, seductive dances in the hills of Scaromonte, even an exquisitely exotic Arabian caravan (the mystical, almost experimental closing track "Caravan of Camels"). John Leftwich's production adds some well-placed electronic percussion amidst the more natural soundscaping on tracks like the swaying title tune, and there are some cool electric guitar enhancements. "El Desperado," a song written in the 17th Century Mexican village of San Miguel de Allende (a place near and dear to the duo's heart), mixes a dusty, steel string enhanced Western atmosphere with a mix of electronica and sparse live percussion. Combining all that with a touch ...
| | Skeeter Davis Pop Hits Collection CD (2003)
Borrowed Angel
$14.69 Recorded between 1962 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Skeeter Davis has had two phases of her career: the first as part of the duo, the Davis Sisters, with Betty Jack Davis (they weren't really sisters, by the way) in the pre-rock & roll era, and the second as a solo Nashville country crossover artist in the 1960s. ...
