This best-of is a convincing display of Tanya Tucker's talented precociousness, as well as her extraordinarily mature way with a lyric--she was barely 15 when she cut David Allan Coe's erotically charged "Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone." Her vocal on "The Man That Turned My Mama On" lends a saucy frisson to this prime example of 1970s Southern country funk, while in "Greener Than the Grass We Laid On," her insouciant "do do do" speaks volumes about a story as old as Alabama dirt and as contemporary as yesterday's headlines.

In 2004 Collectables combined Skeeter Davis' 1965 album Blueberry Hill and her 1973 album The End of the World on one disc. Blueberry Hill finds Davis firmly in country-pop territory. Her strong vocals are surrounded by strings and syrupy arrangements and many of the songs are simple and corny ("The Little Music Box," "Lost to a Geisha Girl"). Davis sounds fully invested in the songs, though, and her aching sound manages to overcome the less than invigorating surroundings. The best songs are those that she wrote or co-wrote herself. "Somebody Else on Your Mind," "Homebreaker," and the bleak "Give Me Death" are the least over-produced and therefore most honest sounding tracks here, and unsurprisingly perhaps Davis sounds the most honest too. Jules and The Family began three years ago when four closeted rock-and-roll stars decided to let their true passions shine, real jobs be damned. They started playing together in Westchester, August 2001, using Friday night practices to work on their original music while perfecting their rock and roll covers. Their first gig, at Broadway Station in Astoria, Queens, September 2001 was a smash success, although by the end of the 4-hour gig, the audience had definitely shrunk. The band itself, though, grew, as everybody in the audience had decided they too were closeted rock-and-roll stars and joined the band for the final song, a cover of Van Morrison's "Wild Night." While most of us after that night went back to our day jobs, Jules and The Family persevered, writing more songs and building their library of covers. They continued to play in bars and clubs around the city, such as the (now closed) Elbow Room, The Lion's Den and Kenny's Castaways, and in Westchester, at The Sunset House and South Side Inn. The gigs are a mixture of their own true-to-their-roots rock songs and the covers you love to hear. Audience participation is a must.
