Matapins album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their ...
| | Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Ghanaian Blue 1968-81 CDs (2009)
Matapins CD music
$20.44 The U.K. label Soundway Records has vaulted itself to the head of the pack within the narrow field of African anthologies. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. This volume, a two-CD set of funk and rock from Ghana all recorded between the late '60s and early '80s, is a churning sea of polyrhythms, chanted vocals, thick, distorted organ sounds, blaring horns, and scorching ...

| | Tenores Di Bitti Ammentos CD (1986)
Matapins music CDs
$12.89 The American reissue of a 1986 European release by the Tenores features a slightly different member line-up than 1996's S'Amore 'E Mama, and the discs share a few songs from the Tenores' repertoire as well. Both releases are fine examples of Sardinian polyphonic singing, and the differences between the two are mostly sonic. S'Amore 'E Mama is mixed with loads of bass, the better to appreciate the contributions of Mario Pira, the bassu vocalist, whose guttural, deep nasal bellowing is said to imitate the lowing of oxen, and of contra Tancredi Tucconi, who abuses his vocal cords in emulation of bleating sheep. This earlier recording has a thinner mix that emphasizes the midrange and thus the melodies of lead singer Piero Sanna. Overall, it's a bit easier on the ears, though ...

| | Hit The Lights This Is A Stick Up... Don't Make It A Murder CD (2006)
Matapins album
$11.85 Lima, OH's Hit the Lights deliver a largely contagious, if not sometimes lyrically underdeveloped song cycle known as This Is a Stick Up... Don't Make It a Murder. But if pop/punk is your bag, this Colin Ross-steered troupe will give you plenty of excuses to singalong. From the irresistible "Bodybag" to the addictive "Speakers Blown," these are anthems for MySpace-addled dudes and chicks. Early disciples might balk at HTL's decision to recycle "Save Your Breath" and "These Backs Are Made for Stabbing," as well as the title track from their debut EP Until We Get Caught, but these Matt Squire (Panic! At the Disco) produced versions are clean and mean. There are a few inadequacies (like the just-okay "One Hundred Times") in the midst of an otherwise fine disc, but the enthusiastic parting shot, "Make a Run for It," is sweet redemption. ~ John D. Luerssen
A five piece rock machine hailing from Lima, Ohio, Hit The Lights (Colin Ross (Vocals) Omar Zehery (Guitar), Nate Van Dame (Drums), David Bermosk (Bass, Vocals) and Nick Thompson (Guitar/Vocals)) formed in the summer of '03. Drawn together by their similar musical tastes and devotion to their craft, Hit The Lights bring to the table a new and original twist to their favourite formula. Tying in pop sensibility with infectious melodies, style and flow, Hit The Lights can back up their emotional-fueled ...
