Not really a traditionalist, Chalf Hassan nonetheless does a pretty good job of capturing the aesthetic of a location or mood. His oud playing is informed far more by North African influences than Spanish ones (in particular one can hear parallels to the Gnawa gnbri throughout the album). The sound does draw from sources beyond Morocco, with keyboards reminiscent of Algerian sounds and flute pieces reminiscent of Turkish idioms. Still, it's an interesting album, and rousing at the very least. Give it a listen for some nice grooves and a bit of belly dance, not merely with more academic intents. ~ Adam Greenberg

Rhythms Of Morocco music CDs
$21.39 Many attempts have been made by musicians to create a synthesis between Eastern and Western cultures. Generally the result is that either the Western or Eastern form dominates while the other is merely used for ornamentation. For the past several years Bustan Abraham has met this challenge and has succeeded in pioneering a unique form of instrumental music which combines elements of both these Eastern and Western forms without sacrificing the musical integrity of either.Bustan (Hebrew and Arabic meaning, "garden of fruits and essences," in this case the garden of Abraham, father of Isaac and Ishmail) was founded in 1991 by Avshalom Farjun. It comprises seven distinguished Israeli musicians, both Jews and Arabs, who have combined their musical experience as composers, soloists and heads of musical ensembles to create original music on a very high international level. The musical backgrounds of Bustan Abraham's members are very rich and represent an astonishing variety of musical cultures including classical Arabic music, classical European ...

$16.15 MIRAJ writes and sings a cappella music for Shabbat, Rosh Hodesh and other sacred times.MIRAJ is an acronym of our names: Margot, Rayzel, Juliet.MIRAJ is a blending of harmony and a weaving of friendship.MIRAJ offers songs for prayer, for meditation, for fun.WHAT DO THE CRITICS SAY?"MIRAJ belts, croons, warbles, and whispers."" They sound like the Jewish Roches.""…a musical dvar torah…""…a toe tapping, finger snapping tour de force!"The MIRAJ Story MIRAJ is a creative collaboration between three Jewish leaders and educators: Rabbi Margot Stein, Rabbi Geela Rayzel Raphael, and Juliet Irene Spitzer. The three women met many years ago in a Hebrew grammar class as students at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. They formed a study group to help overcome the monotony of the course, and soon found themselves laughing and munching on chips as much as studying. The three later began working together on a book about Jewish women's rituals. During retreats to work on the book, they began to sing together-all had been singers and songwriters before meeting-and realized how well their voices blended together in harmony. Then singer-songwriter Linda Hirschhorn asked them to open for her at a local concert, and MIRAJ was born."We have met every Tuesday each week since then for rehearsal, but really it's more like lunch, life and ...
