At The Gates Of Horn album
$7.19 The first solo release by contemporary blues-based artist Keb Mo' mixes a reverence for traditional country blues with more streamlined elements of commercial pop. Despite a convincing "down-home" approach of gravel-textured vocals and superior slide work and finger-picking skills, Keb Mo' avoids the pose of a hard line revivalist. Instead, he chooses to employ his fluency in the Delta tradition as a palette ...

| | Holsapple-Stamey Mavericks CD (1991)
At The Gates Of Horn album
$11.79 As the singer-songwriters behind '80s power-pop cult heroes the dB's, Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey made some serious history together. Reconvening for this duo album years after they initially parted ways, they embraced the more melodic, folk-rock-flavored side of their old sound, largely eschewing the quirkier aspects of the dB's. This move made for a gorgeous collection that highlights the pair's new-wave-Everly Brothers harmonies and undeniable gift for well-crafted compositions.
Eight years after Chris Stamey left the dB's (and three years after the group finally sputtered to a halt), he reunited with former bandmate Peter Holsapple (who became the group's de facto leader in Stamey's absence) for this duo album. Mavericks finds both Holsapple and Stamey sounding a bit older, quieter, and more pensive than they did in the old days; while one can see many flashes of the bright, angular power pop that dominated the dB's first two albums, most of the songs are dominated by acoustic instruments, somewhat slower tempos, and a more "mature" tone. The introspective overtones of "Angels," "I Know You Will," or "Close Your Eyes" mark a switch from what these guys were doing on Repercussion or Stands for Decibels, but if you're looking for clever and well-crafted pop tunes, both Holsapple and Stamey deliver the goods, and they do rock out a bit here and there (most notably on "Lovers Rock" and the wonderfully sardonic "I Want to Break Your Heart"). Both Stamey and Holsapple are at the top of their form as vocalists and players, and they get plenty of welcome assistance from such Hoboken-scene notables as Dave Schramm, James MacMillan, and Jane Scarpantoni (fellow former dB Gene Holder even pops up on one cut). Mavericks often sounds like semi-acoustic post-new wave pop for grownups, but it's a good bit more fun (and less academic) than that description would suggest. The album has also stood the test of time quite well, as the Collectors' Choice's 2007 reissue demonstrates, and the new edition includes six bonus tracks. The new material includes Holsapple's original demo for "Angels," remixes or alternate takes of "Close Your Eyes," "Anymore," "Here Without You," and "I Know You Will" (the latter as an instrumental, with additional guitar from Dave Schramm), and one otherwise unavailable tune, the country-flavored "Hollywood Waltz." In the new liner notes, Holsapple and Stamey write "It is our hope that the inclusion of these bonus tracks will add to the listening experience for you," and while they don't add much to an album that was already pretty great, they don't take much away, either, and with or without them Mavericks is one of the finest discs these gifted musicians have given us.
