| | Whitney Houston One Wish: The Holiday Album CD (2003)
Stars On 33 CD music
$8.49 Whitney Houston's soulful, elastic voice was practically made to wrap around Christmas standards, but despite the naturalness of the match, ONE WISH, out for Christmas 2003, as the singer neared her third decade of performing, marks her first holiday album. What lies within shouldn't disappoint as she covers many familiar tunes with just a sprinkle ...

$10.09 THE PREACHER'S WIFE was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I Believe In You And Me" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy.
Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is ...

Stars On 33 album
$9.89 Hammerlock's members have never been champions of political correctness -- in fact, it's safe to say that the trio's risk-taking, totally infectious blend of alternative metal, punk, and country-fried Southern rock has been a rebellion against all things PC. And those who singer/guitarist Travis Kenney (lead vocals, guitar) and his wife Liza Kenney (bass, vocals) have offended in the past won't be converted by Barefoot and Pregnant, which is Hammerlock's first album for the Philadelphia-based Steel Cage label and third album overall. The hilarious front cover shows a picture of an obviously pregnant Liza baring her belly and pointing a rifle in the air while she stands near the kitchen sink -- ...
| | Gong Arista Years CDs (2008) Import
Stars On 33 CD music
$22.09 Given the wonderful Gazeuse! (not to mention the following Expresso II), Time Is the Key (on disc one of Arista Years) sounds stilted, with Moerlen often locked into simplistic rhythms not too far removed from a drum machine as arpeggiated vibes are precisely layered over mostly uninteresting progressions played by Peter Lemer on synth, Bon Lozaga on guitar, and Hansford Rowe on bass. When Holdsworth appears -- as on "Esnuria Two" (predictably inferior to the original) -- his solos sound as if they were phoned in. Leave It Open, appearing on disc two, is a marginal improvement, although while Charlie Mariano's soprano sax may provide some jazz cred at face value, his solos are generally without distinction. However, sandwiched between these two studio outings on Arista Years is 1980's Live recording, which does manage to capture some of the excitement of Gazeuse!, with the band suitably revved up and a couple of brief spots for guests Malherbe and Oldfield standing out. But if this is truly an Arista Years best-of, why not include something from 1979's Downwind, the group's first Arista release -- featuring appearances by Malherbe, Oldfield, Steve Winwood, Mick Taylor, and Didier Lockwood -- and cherry-pick the best from the three LPs included in their entirety here? Arista Years has some good music if you search for it, but better to start with Gazeuse! to appreciate the best of Pierre Moerlen (who, sadly, passed away in 2005) in instrumental jazz-rock mode -- or look for the Daevid Allen-led Gong's You or Steve Hillage's Fish Rising to catch his great percussives in earlier space rock territory as a member of the woo
