Mozart: Te Deum/Haydn: Grosse Orgelmesse
$19.30 Andrea Bocelli's 2009 My Christmas album finds the Italian tenor performing various classic holiday-themed songs that touch on a mix of classical, opera, and pop. Included are such well-known holiday songs as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "O Tannenbaum," and "Silent Night." The versatile Bocelli also delves into such iconic Christmas hits as "Blue Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" (featuring a duet with Natalie Cole). Of course, the opera and classic songs are Bocelli's bread and butter, and here listeners get such lavishly produced cuts as "Adeste Fidelis," "Cantique del Noel," and "Caro Gesu Bambino." My Christmas is not only a warm and inviting holiday album, but also a superb classical crossover entry worthy of Bocelli's discography. ~ Matt Collar

Mozart: Te Deum/Haydn: Grosse Orgelmesse
$8.09 This 22-minute ambient tone poem could serve as the end credit score for a motion picture showing the desolation of a deserted city whose landmarks have been blown away by something or other. The piece opens with a serene, attractive tune stated by the piano over sheets of sound from a string quartet. Eventually low-pitched trombone clusters join the string quartet as the piano part
becomes even simpler. There are passages of stasis as the piece tries to figure out what to do next but Jim Fox usually comes up with some densely sustained new ideas before things drift for too long. As in other entries in this series, the CD-single format is a good way to impose some discipline on the longeurs of the ambient style heard here. ~ Richard S. Ginell
