Autumn Leaves album
$55.98 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary ...

$13.69 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.

| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Autumn Leaves album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and harmonic range of the brass section on full display, and contains a smoking solo break by Hargrove. Some of the standards that really shine are an unusually restrained and utterly elegant "My Funny Valentine" and the finger-popping "September in the Rain," the former arranged by bass trombonist Max Siegel and the latter by Hargrove. Frank Lacy's "Requiem" ...

Autumn Leaves music CDs
$9.89 LULLABY OF BIRDLAND contains 2 LPs on 2 discs: BLUES ALLEY JAZZ (1980)/ON A CLEAR DAY (1980).
Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington, D.C. in October 1979. Originally released on Concord (4110).
Recorded live at the Concord Pavillion, Concord, California in August 1980. Originally released on Concord (4132).
LULLABY OF BIRDLAND presents two classic live albums, BLUES ALLEY JAZZ and ON A CLEAR DAY, in a double-disc set. Both records pair pianist George Shearing with bassist Brian Torff for two evenings of highly accessible bop playing. The melody-heavy chordings that Shearing popularized with his quintet are still in the mix here, but with significantly more freedom for the pianist to move fluidly around the keyboard, peeling off complex solos chock full of quotations and cleverly re-invented melodic fragments. Versions of Billy Taylor's "One for the Woofer" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Up a Lazy River" display Shearing's quick wit and improvisatory flair.
Torff impresses with his lightning-swift runs and smooth, rhythmic sensibility. He is as comfortable holding the bottom end down with subtle elegance as he is blazing across the frets in harmonic dialogue with Shearing's lines. The interplay between the two is seamless on ballads ("Autumn in New York") and funky, Latin-tinged numbers ("That's What She Says"). On the whole, these dates have a sophisticated, dinner club feel, with plenty of chops to please hardcore ...

| | Youssou N'Dour Egypt CD (2004)
Autumn Leaves CD music
$14.99 International pop star Youssou N'Dour explores of the themes and sounds of Senegal's Sufi culture on this striking 2004 release. Markedly different than the artist's other albums, on which African elements combine with Caribbean influence and various American styles (including soul, jazz, and rock), EGYPT moves away from N'Dour's trademark pop and deep into the territory of traditional religious music. Though characterized by an undercurrent of West African rhythms and inflections, the sound here--as the title indicates--draws on North African and Middle Eastern Arab music, and features such regional instruments as the oud, the arghul (a double-reed bamboo flute), tablas, and various Arab Gulf percussion.
There is a distinct classical aura here (the personnel list includes an arranger, a conductor, and a score manager). The Fathy Salama Orchestra, which backs N'Dour throughout, features--in addition to Egyptian flutes and drums--first and bass violins, and the group's complex, elegant interplay gives these recordings a stately, stirring feel. N'Dour's voice, in contrast to its usual role as a high, soaring lead, blends subtly into the musical fabric here. A recording notable for its focus, passion, and beauty, EGYPT is possibly N'Dour's riskiest and most artistically rewarding album.
While N'Dour's international releases have always combined Senegalese musical traditions with outside sources of inspiration, "Egypt" takes a fresh approach. On this album, the rhythms and melodies of Senegal drive arrangements featuring Egyptian and Arabian orchestral ...

| | Nat Gonella How'm I Doin'? CD (1987) (Import)
Autumn Leaves CD music
$12.69 Englishman Nat Gonella has always been somewhat overlooked in the U.S. since his records have long been rare, but he was one of the best trumpeters of the 1930s, and an enjoyable singer too. He recorded extensively with his Georgians during the swing era, including the 20 titles included on this superior (and generous) British LP. Performing hot standards along with a couple of originals, Gonella is heard in peak form on such tunes as "How'm I Doin'," "Fan It," "The Music Goes Round and Round," "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn" and "Lady Be Good." No pre-bop collection is complete without ...
