767 album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, creating cheerful genre-bending where Sweet gives way to the Scissor Sisters, and it's never, ever necessary for a listener to recognize the allusions, either ...

$15.30 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, THE CIRCLE, the band's fifth studio effort of the `00s, is a back-to-roots return to form focused on uplifting hooks and a hard-hitting guitar rock energy. Once again teaming ...

| | Marco Borsato Onderweg CD (2002) Import
767 album
$47.75 Dutch pop star Marco Borsato is featured on this best-of set entitled ONDERWERG. Borsato sings in Dutch. The set includes new songs, unreleased material, and a five-track bonus disc.
On this album all of Marco Borsato's greatest hits since 1994's Marco up until 2002's Luid en Duidelijk are collected. Consequently, there are no Italian songs here, only Dutch ones, beginning with the translations of the early Dutch years, "Margherita," and culminating with many of his collaborations with composer John Ewbank and 2002 single "Lopen Op Het Water" with Sita. His other most well known single, "Wereld Zonder Jou," a collaboration sung with Trijntje Oosterhuis, is also included. There are no great songs left out, although some could argue that "Iemand Zoals Jij" should have been included in the single-disc version over a song like "Speeltuin." What Onderweg most clearly demonstrates is the consistency that Borsato has shown over the years, and his ability to create a fusion between dramatics, romanticism, and accessibility -- that is: to speak to ...
| | Brokeback Looks At The Bird CD (2003)
767 CD music
$12.25 On its third release, Brokeback brings the quiet. While Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen contribute their exquisite vocals to a few tracks, they're mostly of the wordless sort, used more for spice or texture than as a main ingredient. One of those numbers, "In the Reeds," could almost be mistaken for an outtake from the bossa nova landmark Getz/Gilberto featuring the similarly angelic-sounding Astrud Gilberto. Looks at the Bird is an otherwise instrumental affair with a few jazzy touches here and there. Sometimes it sounds like Ennio Morricone, sometimes the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Mostly it sounds like its own thing. Although six-string bass guitarist Douglas McCombs has played with Chicago's Eleventh Dream Day and Pullman, Bird sounds more like the work of Tortoise, another post-rock combo with which he's been associated. Brokeback, in the person of McCombs and upright bassist Noel Kupersmith, even takes on Tortoise's "The Suspension Bridge at Iguazú Falls," as well as Walter Schumann's "Pearl's Dream" from Charles Laughton's moody masterpiece The Night of the Hunter. The latter concludes the album and features a lovely vocal from Hansen. It's a fitting testament to the singer, who perished in a traffic accident in late 2002. ~ Kathleen C. Fennessy
