| | Dick Todd You Can't Brush Me Off CD (2009) Import
Tumbling Tumbleweeds CD music
$7.89 2009 collection from the Canadian crooner. Back in the days of wholesome radio entertainment, Bing Crosby and Tommy Dorsey used to do a routine that had as its punch line the question "I wonder where Dick Todd is tonight?" The question always got a laugh because Dick Todd was perceived as North America's most accomplished Bing Crosby imitator, emulating him so closely as to become known as ...
| | Alabama Christmas, Vol. 2 CD (1996)
Tumbling Tumbleweeds music CDs
$5.95 Principally recorded at The Tracking Room, Nashville, Tennessee.
Like its predecessor, Alabama's Christmas, Vol. 2 is a pleasant mix of traditional holiday carols ("Little Drummer Boy," "O Little Town of Bethlehem"), and fine but undistinguished, original carols like "New Year's Eve 1999" and "Christmas in Your Arms." There's not much about Christmas, Vol. 2 for listeners that aren't already fans of the group, but for fans, it's a fine addition to their collection. ~ Thom ...

| | Sugarland Gold & Green CD (2009)
Tumbling Tumbleweeds album
$12.35 Georgia's Sugarland rose to great heights in 2009 - their 2008 album LOVE ON THE INSIDE reached platinum status, they recorded a prime-time network television special called LIVE ON THE INSIDE, which was then released in numerous packages that all sold well, and the group has sold out live shows globally. Therefore it seems to make sense for the group to release yet another stop-gap before the year runs out in lieu of a new studio album. GOLD AND GREEN is a hybrid holiday recording. It contains ten tracks, five of which are Christmas standards including a country boogie version of "Winter Wonderland," a "backwoods" "O Come O Come Emmanuel," and a steeped-in-reverence acoustic version of "Silent Night," sung bilingually in Spanish and English. The other five cuts are originals themed for the holidays. One has to give Sugarland some marks for trying to do something different than a standard-issue Christmas album.

| | Dance Hall Crashers Old Record (1989-1992) CD (1996)
Tumbling Tumbleweeds music CDs
$6.95 Running chronologically backwards through the Dance Hall Crashers' archives, Old Record (1989-1992) bundles up in its entirety their self-titled debut album, along with a trio of earlier recordings, their contribution to the California Ska-Quake compilation, and a hat trick of new songs. Therefore, the compilation closes with what was the band's initial statement of intent, the exhilarating "DHC," while also found dangling at the bottom of the set is the exuberant "Skinhead BBQ," both songs dating from 1989. It wasn't long before DHC caught the ear of Moon Records, and set to walk on their debut album, a giddy mixture of poppy punk rock and ska, built around a mid-tempo beat, with the band's signature dual vocals to the fore, and boasting lashings of guitar and strong, horn-drenched melodies. It was a distinctive mix that was not only far removed from the ska emanating off the east coast, but was equally unique on their own side of the continental divide.
DHC folded just as Dance Hall Crashers hit the shops, but came back together for a one-off show at San Francisco's Slim's in 1992. So rabid was the audience response to their appearance that the group decided to permanently re-form there and then. The compilation opens with the three numbers that DHC wrote and recorded soon after that happy event. The rocking "Othello," the more delicate skanker "Nuisance," and the ...
| | Buddy Miller Midnight & Lonesome CD (2002)
Tumbling Tumbleweeds songs
$11.19 Buddy Miller's fourth solo release (fifth if you count 2001's collaboration with wife Julie Miller) slots comfortably into the established formula around which he's structured all of his albums. Lots of honky tonk infused into heartfelt ballads (Jesse Winchester's "A Showman's Life"), upbeat rockers (the Everly Brothers' "The Price of Love"), rural hillbilly ("Wild Card"), and a stray soul cover (Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love"). Emmylou Harris, whose band he plays in, adds backing vocals. Wife Julie does as well, and also contributes four songs in addition to co-writing three others. Old pals like songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Tammy Rogers on fiddle, and Al Perkins handling steel guitar also make appearances. But even though he's following his own blueprint, Miller never just goes through the motions, making this one of his most consistent and enjoyable works. The couple successfully shifts gears by delving into traditional Cajun on "Oh Fait Pitié d'Amour" and acoustic jazz/blues with standup bass on the Mayfield cover. The tracks range from playful on a silly but jaunty "Little Bitty Kiss" to serious on the somber and stark closing "Quecreek," a song written and recorded a few hours after the rescue of workers at the titular mine. Miller teams up with Vigilantes of Love frontman Bill Mallonee for "Water When the Well Is Dry," a crackling country-rocker ...
