$12.50 | | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve And Other Stories CD (1996)
Shostakovitch:Symphonies Nos 5 & 6
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want ...
| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Shostakovitch:Symphonies Nos 5 & 6
$10.39 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the ...

| | Pablo Aslan Avantango CD (2004)
Shostakovitch:Symphonies Nos 5 & 6
$13.45 Bassist Pablo Aslan is the leading exponent of the vibrant New York tango-jazz scene. With Avantango, the native of Argentina and prodigious talent features his ensemble -- Avantango -- on an assortment of original compositions and exceptional covers that heighten his diverse musical repertoire with fresh interpretations. Aslan offers his listeners several excellent renditions of Astor Piazzolla's most revered compositions including "Deus Xango," "Vuelvo Al Sur," "Escualo," "Verano Porteno," and "La Calle 92." On "Deus Xango," he leaves the arrangement in the original key and adds a brilliant tenor saxophone solo by Oscar Feldman. Vocalist Roxana Fontan is superior on the bluesy "Vuelvo Al Sur," and gives a memorable performance on the duet with Aslan on "Malena," that should remind listeners of duets heard from bassist Avishai Cohen and Chilean vocalist Claudia Acuna when they performed together on a regular basis. With "Escualo," which Piazzolla wrote for his favorite violinist Fernando Suarez Paz, Aslan gives listeners the opportunity to catapult their imaginations and re-live Suarez Paz's infamous violin virtuosity by receiving the gifts through Fernando's son, Leonardo Suarez Paz. Leonardo plays with the same intense passion and clarity heard a generation ago on his father's recordings. Pablo Aslan's note-for-note jazz bass artistry is on display throughout the CD, but on "Verano Porteno," Aslan's theme ...
