When 4AD released the lavish and extensive Lullabies to Violaine, they also split the original four-disc release into two separate volumes. This, the first volume, covers the Cocteau Twins' 4AD era, from the beginning through Heaven or Las Vegas -- the singles/EPs Lullabies, Peppermint Pig, Sunburst and Snowblind, The Spangle Maker, Aikea-Guinea, Tiny Dynamine, Echoes in a Shallow Bay, Love's Easy Tears, and Iceblink Luck. With the exception of the 12" mixes of "Peppermint Pig" and "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops," everything that appeared on the original releases is contained here, though Robin Guthrie does supply alternate mixes of "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops" and "Aikea-Guinea" (which won't make a lick of difference to 999 out of 1,000 fans). ~ Andy Kellman
Originally issued as a box set in the UK, now split into two double CD packages.

Lullabies To Violaine Vol. 1 album
$17.15 The Cocteau Twins' BBC SESSIONS, taken predominantly from the early '80s period of the band's first three albums and EPs, boasts a number of previously unreleased tracks. One such cut, a rare cover, is a suitably anguished arrangement of the Billie Holiday classic "Strange Fruit." A number of songs from the 1996 album MILK & KISSES complete the set. The collection illustrates the early and late periods of the Twins' career, from their somewhat dark, mystical, and percussive beginnings to the celebratory guitar paeans of later work. One might say it is an incomplete meal, and idealists will doubtless crave a main course ...
| | Cocteau Twins Head Over Heels CD (1983) Remastered
Lullabies To Violaine Vol. 1 CD music
$10.35 Standouts include "The Tinderbox (of a Heart)," which is fleshed out with synthesized orchestral strings and multilayered vocal tracks; the strange, barreling, music-hall quality of "Multifoiled"; and the crunching, heavily echoed "Musette and Drums," which features Elizabeth Fraser's vocals at both their most commanding and most elusive. Arguably ...
| | Cocteau Twins Victorialand CD (1986) Remastered
Lullabies To Violaine Vol. 1 music CDs
$9.79 In the two years following TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins released three EPs: AIKEA-GUINEA, TINY DYNAMINE, and ECHOES IN A SHALLOW BAY. Each of these records saw the band moving progressively further away from the heavier sound of previous releases. VICTORIALAND (1986) was the apex of this trend and easily their most ethereal, airy album. Interested listeners should also check out the band's 1986 THE MOON AND THE MELODIES, recorded with ambient musician Harold Budd.
VICTORIALAND features very little in the way of percussion on most tracks, instead concentrating ...
| | Cocteau Twins Treasure CD (1984) Remastered
Lullabies To Violaine Vol. 1 songs
$10.15 With their third album, TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup--vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie, and bassist Simon Raymonde. One of the band's most impressionistic records, it abandons the "phrase" titles of previous records in favor of mythological-sounding one word names, encouraging listeners to make up their own interpretations of the songs. Sound-wise, the band's performance, though not confrontational, is more aggressive, ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Lullabies To Violaine Vol. 1 album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues ...
