| | Phantom Of The Opera CD (1987) Original Soundtrack
Beethoven: String Quartet Nos. 7 & 8
$15.65 Music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics by Charles Hart.
It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. So when the time came to adapt his music for the film version of the monumentally successful theatrical work, Webber enlisted the aid of longtime collaborators Nigel Wright and Simon Lee. They produced an expanded orchestral version of the score, grander and more sumptuous than the original, and assembled a 100-member ensemble to do it justice.
However, the tragic story of the disfigured Phantom and Christine, the beautiful object of his desire, cannot be told without powerful performances of those roles. Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum quickly dispel any concerns regarding the adequacy of their portrayals. Butler's full-blooded renditions of "The Music of the Night" ...

Beethoven: String Quartet Nos. 7 & 8
$12.64 A magical collection of Christmas songs from the 22 year old singing phenomenon that is Hayley Westenra. Winter Magic combines some of the best loved and most familiar seasonal carols such as 'Silent Night' and 'Coventry Carol' with popular Christmas songs 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Sleigh Ride', as well as tracks Hayley has written herself ( Peace Shall Come, All With You and Christmas Morning). The variety of the song choices perfectly showcases the versatility of Hayley's angelic voice and her ability to not only perform in a beautiful, classical way (Corpus Christi Carol) but also in a considerably more 'pop' style (Peace Shall Come). Hayley released her first album 'Pure' at the age of 16 and it was soon on ...

| | Flux String Gosfield: Flying Sparks And Heavy Machinery CD (2001)
Beethoven: String Quartet Nos. 7 & 8
$12.75 Annie Gosfield's outdone herself this time. The two compositions here, "EWA7" and the title piece, are related, first cousins, based in a sound world she discovered while traveling through the factories of Nuremberg trying to record enough sounds to create something that mirrored art and industry back to one another. A gargantuan piece over 42 minutes in length, "EWA7" is comprised of different machine sounds captured in their original landscapes from huge drill presses and steel rollers to the buzzing sound of arc lights overhead. From this cacophony of noise, Gosfield began to hear patters emerge and timbres assert themselves, even rhythms begin to make some kind of sense through the din. There are three movements in "EWA7" -- named for the factory in which it was performed -- and numerous sections within. There are all manner of industrial sounds, played by workers running cranes and presses, and organic percussion as well as industrial, played by not only workers but members of her ensemble like Jim Pugliese and Sim Cain and effects by Ikue Mori, Gosfield's sampling and tape manipulations, and Roger Kleier's electric guitar (a very altered electric guitar). Sections overlap, sounds disappear and return, insistent one moment whispering the next -- all of them melding into a gorgeous dreamlike whole. The title track was composed for string and percussion quartets, ...

| | Sissel Into Paradise CD (2006)
Beethoven: String Quartet Nos. 7 & 8
$11.35 If you think you've never heard this classical Norwegian singer, dig into your CD collection and pull out the Titanic soundtrack. Alongside the Oscar-winning Celine Dion tune everyone remembers are tracks and tracks of Sissel's haunting, ethereal vocals illuminating the tragedy of the sinking liner. Over her varied 20-year career, she's sung for queens, princes, Winter Olympics, and Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies -- in addition to dates with Dion and Josh Groban, who in some ways could be considered her American male equivalent. While a brilliant singer of uncommon range and emotional depth, she may have a bit of trouble finding an easy niche because albums like Into Paradise are slightly all over the map. But that's not a bad thing for adventurous listeners who want to take the journey, which runs from Mozart to Bach, Puccini to (and you have to wait until track 12) ABBA ("Like an Angel Passing Through")! Then there are the Norse folk tales, which are obviously close to home. A lack of familiarity with some of the material, however, will help the listener focus on the purity of her voice. The one quality she possesses that some of her pop-classical counterparts don't is restraint, and the production is very focused on her voice rather than on booming production and powerhouse grooves (though she boasts punkers and rappers on her résumé). The collection was recorded in Norway with the internationally renowned Trondheim Soloists. ~ Jonathan Widran
