This is Colin Stranahan's second release for Capri. His first CD, "Dreams Untold" (CAP #74063), was recorded when he was only 17 years old. Now 19, Colin was awarded the Brubeck Scholarship and studies at the Brubeck Institute, the Presidential Scholarsh
Personnel: Colin Stranahan (drums); Remy Le Boeuf (flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Michael Bailey (tenor saxophone); Greg Gisbert (trumpet); Pascal Le Boeuf (piano); Mark Clifford (vibraphone). Audio Mixer: Colin Bricker. Liner Note Authors: Colin Stranahan; Paul Romaine. Recording information: Notably Fine Audio Studio, Denver, CO (06/17/2005/06/18/2005). This surprising band led by drummer Colin Stranahan includes two alumni of the 2004 IAJE Clifford Brown/Stan Getz All Stars (the leader and bassist Dominic Thiroux) plus several other talented young men including tenor saxophonist Michael Bailey, multi-reed player Remy Le Boeuf, and pianist Pascal Le Boeuf. With most of the band's repertoire written by its members, all of whom show promise as both performers and composers, the band makes a striking impression, beginning with Remy Le Boeuf's intense post-bop opener, "Song for Briana #3." Thiroux's mournful "The Search" hooks the listener immediately with its hypnotic vamp and increasingly turbulent tenor sax solo, while his Latin-accented "No Thanks" makes the band sound like it has been together for years instead of months. The leader contributed the dreamy "Out of Reach," which adds vibraphonist Mark Clifford. Jim Stranahan, the drummer's father, wrote the brisk 12-bar blues "It's Not Always About You" and plays alto sax as well, while veteran trumpeter Greg Gisbert also adds a potent solo. This is an impressive beginning for this group of promising young musicians. ~ Ken Dryden

Transformation
$9.89 Recorded at Sam Therapy Studios, London, England. Photographer: Andy Rumball. Depeche Mode's evolution from trendy synthesized pinup boys to platinum-selling synth-rock superstars probably came as a shock for those who first heard the band's British hits "New Life" and "Just Can't Get Enough" in the early '80s. The band's 1981 debut album Speak and Spell was a disposable but entertaining collection of frothy dance tunes that made the Human League sound like Joy Division. Founding member Vince Clarke left the band prior to the recording of its second album, leaving songwriting duties to Martin Gore, who took the band in an entirely different direction on albums like Some Great Reward and ...
