This CD contains the first of 4 sessions Moody made for EmArcy/Mercury. Two pepped-up "oldies" lead into to the aptly named "Moody's Home." By early 1952, several former members of Dizzy Gillespie's big band had gathered around Moody whom they knew well

Personnel: Iona Wade, Eddie Jefferson, Babs Gonzales (vocals); Dave Burns, Johnny Grimes (trumpet); Don Cole, William Shepherd , Robert Range (trombone); John "Johnny" Adriano Acea, Jimmy Boyd , Sadik Hakim (piano); Chink Williams, Joe Harris , Teddy Stewart (drums).
Liner Note Author: Anatol Schenker.
Recording information: New York, NY (10/??/1951-04/12/1954).
Back in New York after three years spent gigging and recording in Europe, a mature and rejuvenated James Moody resumed the endless North American scuffle to get by as a contemporary jazz musician. Volume five in the Classics James Moody chronology presents 16 rare Mercury recordings made between October 1951 and June 1953, followed by eight Prestige titles from January and April, 1954. The first four tracks feature baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne; high points include the rowdy, bristling "Moody's Home" and "Wiggle Waggle," an R&B rocker that sounds like something right up out of the King record catalog. Beginning with the material recorded on May 21, 1952, Moody is heard leading a group largely composed of players who, like him, had worked in Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Two of these individuals -- trumpeter Dave Burns and baritone saxophonist Numa "Pee Wee" Moore -- show up regularly in the front line of Moody's excellent recording ensembles between 1952 and 1955. Special mention should be made of pianist Sadik Hakim as well as hip vocalists Iona Wade, Babs Gonzales, and the amazing Eddie Jefferson, who also served as Moody's band boss and road manager. If the Mercury titles are uniformly excellent, early modern jazz, James Moody's 1954 Prestige recordings, particularly his gorgeous rendition of "Over the Rainbow" and the breathtakingly vivid, dangerously danceable "Mambo With Moody" are enduring masterworks that warrant repeated listening. ~ arwulf arwulf

Giovanni Goodman A.K.A. "The Chemo Kid" was born April 4, 1984 in Queens, NY to mother Maria Goodman and father Guglielmo "POPS" Goodman. At the age of 9, his parents moved to Vacaville, CA where he went to local schools: Callison Elementary, Vaca Pena Middle School and Will C. Wood High School. The Chemo Kid hasn't had the easiest roads. At the age of 14, his mother was diagnosed with oral cancer. Spending his freshman and sophomore years going to school in the daytime and nursing his mother at night, while his father worked the graveyard shift, he still found a way to keep his grades up and not get sidetracked. On September 19, 1999, in the beginning of sophomore year, his mother fell to the disease. With this devastating blow to his world, The Chemo Kid stayed on track and accelerated through school, touring across the country playing trumpet with an All State Jazz Ensemble. Lettering in football, baseball, music and track, he graduated with a 3.1 GPA. Straight from high school, he entered the working world and moved his way up the corporate ladder in the banking business. Everything seemed to be going well until a few days before his 21st birthday, when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (a rare cancer). Battling off and on with the disease for the past four years, he endured countless treatments of Chemotherapy, Spinal Taps, Bone Marrow Biopsies and several other tests. Late summer of 2006, he underwent an "Auto Bone Marrow Transplant" that would hold off the cancer for several months, but not catch it. The Chemo Kid once again went through a series of therapies and surgeries throughout 2007-2008, while waiting to receive a "Donor Bone Marrow Transplant". Being half African-American and half Italian-American, chances of a donor were slim, but thankfully, he had his sister, Gabriella Goodman, as a perfect match. During the last stages of testing, The Chemo Kid and his family were hit with another devastating blow, discovering his sister's test showed she also had a rare bone cancer called Multiple Myloma. Now this ...
