(7 Customer Reviews)
More properly the essential output of one of the most creative musicians of the past few decades than a definitive collection, this two-CD best of nevertheless displays the high points of Prince's often eccentric three decades-and-counting career. Disc one is a more-or-less chronological overview of the purple genius's 1980s artistic trajectory, including early cuts like "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Controversy," as well as the later classic ballad "Purple Rain," the bleak yet funky "Sign 'O' the Times," and the miniature gem "Money Don't Matter 2 Night, " while the second CD features extended mixes of tracks like the neo-psychedelic "Raspberry Beret," the slyly suggestive "Little Red Corvette," and Prince's duet with Sheena Easton, "U Got the Look."

Ultimate Prince Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Good But Hardly Necessary Collection! This two cd set is a pretty decent compilation of Prince's hits but hardly necessary seeing as though there's already a "Very Best Of" single disc 17 track collection available. The only reason to purchase this collection is that there are some 12" club versions of some of his songs but unfortunately there's no "I Would Die 4 U" remix which should have been definately been included. AWESOME MUSIC BY ONE AWESOME PERFORMER! Just like Prince mostly throughout his illustrious career, the music on this greatest hits compilation is awesome!
What makes this one special are the very rare extended 12" versions of his classic hits and the B-sides;some of those that I used to have collecting them growing up while listening to them either on vinyl or listening to these songs on the radio back in the day.
Prince,His Royal Baddness,is truly one talented musical genius and iconic monarch and those that follow are truly his Loyal Subjects and you certainly got one right here with me!! Submitted by BSpidey1 (Moss Point,MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
MAny rare 12" mixes Although this is a heard-it-all-before set and does not live up to its title (do any "greatest" "very best of" or other titled collections ever live up???), there are a number of great 12' versions that are rare, out-of-print, and some that have never been released on cd before that make this set enticing. Many many others that would have made this cd truly "ultimate" are missing. Submitted by jcingles (Omaha, NE USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nothing New? What is you Ig'nant? Not only is the set remastered but it contains around 4 "first time on cd" 12" versions. That alone is worth the price. But hold off, it wont be available for a few more months. Submitted by cb70 (G-ville, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
