One of heavy metal's great lost bands resurfaces in this follow-up to its previous best-of collection, FIRST DAZE HERE. Based in Washington, D.C., Pentagram existed in various forms during the 1970s and '80s, never achieving anything but local recognition. This collection of demo and live recordings captures the band at its rawest, sounding surprisingly contemporary on cuts like "Wheel of Fortune," while "Show 'Em How" is a stunning display of unique blues power. The band displays its pre-Led Zeppelin roots with a cover of the Yardbirds' "Little Games," showing on "Yes I Do" that it also had pop smarts to spare, while "Virgin Death" is a masterly demonstration of its full-on metal skills.
Though the band's first official album wouldn't be released for over a decade after they first formed, this criminally overlooked Virginia-based Pentagram was an indisputable pioneer of heavy metal. FIRST DAZE HERE, the first of two reissues of the seminal group's lost 1970s output, places the band in its proper historical context and provides a look at its formative stages. Pentagram is in perhaps a slightly less evil mode here, but as tracks such as "Forever my Queen" and "Review Your Choices" show, they are no less blistering, churning out heavy proto-doom that demands a devil horn salute from anyone listening.

First Daze Here Too (The Vintage Collection) Music Pentagram First Daze Here Too (The Vintage Collection) Songs First Daze Here Too (The Vintage Collection) Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Metal At it's best Wheel of fortune, when the scream comes, teaser and two cover songs(rolling stones under my thumb and yardbirds little games) all could have been hit songs in the seventies. These guys rule!!!!! The second cd isn't as good as the first but it's still amazing. And shame on you kiss for not getting them signed to a major record deal, shame on you. These guys are one of the best kept secrets in music. Submitted by Ryan (Toronto, Ont, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
another excellent compilation First Daze Part 2 contains a LENGTHY booklet with a history of the band written by former members, all lyrics, and many archived photos from "back in the day". Disc 1 carries on where First Daze Vol. 1 left off as the songs are close to album quality. Disc #2 as the liner notes indicate, are noticeably rougher in sound as they represent various "warehouse" recordings from the seventies (though the sound is head & shoulders above the "Human Hurricane" release). This band delivered the doomy goods to absolute perfection though the 70s "Stuff" has a definite "organic" element to it that was later displaced by power doom of massive monumental proportions. If you are a true fan of the band, First Daze Vol. 2 is a quality addition to the Penta-catalogue.
Cheers to Liebling and his fellow ex-members for unearthing these gems in the sub-basement and thrusting them into the limelight (or is that dimelight). Submitted by The Trooper (Marysville, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
