Recording information: The Chopp Shopp Studios, NC. Photographer: Dan Monick. Given his associations with Def Jux's El-P and his 10-plus years as a presence in the rap underground, Murs has plenty of cred to his name. His 2006 release, MURRAY'S REVENGE, is one of his most assured, and finds the MC balancing between his experimental tendencies and more mainstream hip-hop values. With help from producer 9th Wonder, Murs lays down rhymes that address topics that, while standard for rap, are treated with an intelligence and sense of wit not often found in the mainstream. In the underground hip-hop realm there are two basic camps: the one that breaks away from mainstream rap in both style and content, and the other, whose themes and production techniques are closer to its more popular sister, but which also proudly embraces (or at least acknowledges) its independent status. Murs is one of the few artists who fall between the two groups. In Murray's Revenge, like in his 2004 release, Murs 3:16, his even-paced delivery shies away from ten-cent words and his songs often deal with the standard rap subjects -- a hard life, women, and his own talent -- but he is also unafraid to dispel some social constructs that many of his peers only help to perpetuate. In "Dreamchaser" he explains that the draw to gang life is because of a lack of positive opportunity ("We all chase money 'cause we scared to chase dreams"), and he discusses the difficulties of not fitting cleanly into racial stereotypes in "D.S.W.G. (Dark Skinned White Girls)," an issue that's fairly common in contemporary, diverse America. When Murs does slide into talking about himself and his skills -- a topic no true MC can avoid -- he's such a good storyteller that his boasting isn't boring, and he's also willing to admit the bad decisions he's made, creating a real sincerity in his rhymes. Some of the songs are meant to be didactic, but he's usually subtle enough to convey his message without being preachy ("For if a soul is avenged through the deeds of a friend/Then success has always been the best form of revenge"). It's not all seriousness, though; Murs has always been one for a chuckle, and there are some humorous tracks (the aptly named "Silly Girl," for example), but there's enough quality, content, and warm West Coast soul samples (courtesy of producer 9th Wonder) in Murray's Revenge to make it a good album that should please fans of any type of hip-hop. ~ Marisa BrownEntertainment Weekly (p.75) - "[A] cohesive mix of songs about urban blight, relationships, and contemporary hip-hop culture." -- Grade: A- Murs Murray's Revenge Songs Murray's Revenge Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews ANOTHER CLASSIC The marriage of 9th wonder and MURS consistently produces good music and Murrays Revenge surpassed already high expectations. Murray's Revenge 3:16
Sorry, it's just flatout better. 3:16 had some dull moments, on the other hand 'Murray's Revenge' had only 1 weak song. You can't go wrong with either, and I would recommend getting both. 'Murray's Revenge' is that get-at-you type record. Murs attacks each track with that raw emotion, there are no gimmicks here folks. Murs is even more serious this time around. That is why it's better than 3:16. Submitted by Culture (revisited for a 3rd time) (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
West Coast Flava for the Ears Murs really brought the goodies on 'Murray's Revenge'. This lp doesn't touch the greatness of '3:16', but it's still candy for the ears. I don't think anyone else from the Living Legends is ever going to come out as hard as Murs. If you don't have this album already, you should cop it. Finest of west coast hip hop. Red Flag: Mark Reynolds, Chris Reynolds. Audio Mixer: Joseph Watt. Audio Remixers: Red Flag; Seibold. Recording information: Platinum Island Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: Jeannine Pinkerton. The Liverpool duo Red Flag (brothers Chris and Mark Reynolds) released their debut album, Naďve Art, in 1989. Red Flag, like other late-'80s/early-'90s bands such as Camouflage and Cause & Effect, offer a similar mix of gloomy, synthesizer-driven dance-pop made popular by synth rock kings Depeche Mode. Derivative yet melodic, Naďve Art is a decent debut, though it eventually runs out of steam. Red Flag's obvious debt to Depeche Mode is immediately apparent in the minor club hits "If I Ever" and "Russian Radio." Though the production is a bit rough around the edges, the combination of cold synth beats and the emotionless ...

Murray's Revenge
$13.85 Regular version of the Swedish death metal act's 2004 album from on the Nuclear Blast label.
In Flames: Anders Friden (vocals); Bjorn Gelotte, Jesper Stromblad (guitar); Peter Iwers (bass); Daniel Svensson (drums). Recorded in Denmark. This release includes a bonus DVD. In Flames: Peter Iwer (bass instrument); Anders Fridén, Jesper Strömblad, Daniel Svensson. Personnel: Anders Fridén (vocals); Björn Gelotte, Jesper Strömblad (guitar); Daniel Svensson (drums); Orjan Ornkloo (programming, sampler). Audio Mixers: Anders Fridén; Daniel Bergstrand; Orjan Ornkloo. Recording information: Denmark; Dug-Out Studio. Arranger: In Flames. In Flames was certainly under the extreme-metal microscope upon the release of Soundtrack to Your Escape and its predecessor, Reroute to Remain. The band had the potential to crack the metal underground wide to the mainstream, existing on the cusp of international stardom with its progressive extrapolations upon the Swedish metal genre they helped create. Fact is, Soundtrack to Your Escape exists to further polarize In Flames' fan base -- "Touch of Red" and opening cut "F(r)iend" are their heaviest riff monsters since Colony, which blatantly contrast "The Quiet Place," which is jammed with cascading guitar melodies and a thick, sticky chorus which, in a just world, would make for a rock-radio smash. Anders Fridén is again using a myriad of vocal styles, including his mid-range death rasp (see "Dead Alone," with its old-school Swedish riffs seamlessly morphing into melodic passages), an awkward clean croon ("Like You Better Dead," ...
