(2 Customer Reviews)
It's unclear whether the title of So They Say's full-length debut, Antidote for Irony, was supposed to be a statement on the take-yourself-way-too-seriously aesthetic of the Warped Tour scene of the mid-2000s. However, it fittingly describes So They Say in the sense that their take on emo is a straightforward and melodic one. With one foot rooted in pop-punk sensibilities and the other planted in post-hardcore strain, So They Say have created 11 smooth, emotion-filled songs that -- probably due in part to producer Matt Squire's touch -- just manage to sidestep a generic branding. Just is the operative word, however, as vocals occasionally resemble a tougher version of the Starting Line circa "Best of Me" and really, that's all been heard before. The album begins well enough with the pensive sentiments of "In Loving Memory Of" -- a midtempo tune that ponders one's own funeral among subtle string arrangements and engaging vocals. Near the record's end, however, the band seems to be getting a little ahead of itself with the ambient "Act Like You're Listening, Till It's Your Turn to Talk," whose indulgent and spacy qualities don't quite fit in with the rest of the album. Nevertheless, the record still plays as enjoyable and there are enough strong ideas present to hint at So They Say's ability to expand past their angst beyond this debut. ~ Corey Apar

| | Silverstein When Broken Is Easily Fixed CD (2003)
Antidote For Irony CD music
$9.89 Silverstein's Victory debut is a jarring mixture of emo's earnest determination, elements of hardcore, and the heaviest of heavy metal. While vocalist Shane Told delivers lines like "How can I say I love you back, you never made me happy" in a cracked, soaring singing voice, When Broken Is Easily Fixed actually begins with a ragged scream that's as arresting as his singing is plaintive. Musically, the LP is dominated by the dynamic shifts and driving melodies of emo. But Silverstein's membership was derived from existing hardcore, metal, and punk squads, and these influences are never very far from view. "Last Days of Summer" begins as a June day ends, with shuffling percussion and gently ...
| | Darkest Hour Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation CD (2003)
Antidote For Irony music CDs
$10.85 On Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, it should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band rolls through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger
To be indelicate, the vocal style that's taken grip throughout much punk/metal crossover ...

Antidote For Irony album
$11.39 Voted "COOL COMPOSER"by Rolling Stone Magazine (2003 Cool Issue)For the past nine years, Butt Boy has been composing original music designed to set the tone for dungeon scenes, gaining a loyal cult following in the leather world. Having done his masters work in music composition, he has created his own cottage industry, marketing as well as producing seven albums. Butt Boy has come a long way from his beginnings. He started writing his music for use in his own scenes, feeling that mass-produced music being used in dungeon play was at best incidental and at worst intrusive. He set out to create music that could become a part of, even inspire, the action. As friends and "partners" heard his creations, they encouraged him to package the songs and release an album. However, there was no market for self-described "Dungeon Music." It too had to be created. Thus Butt Boy began in Houston during "Living in Leather '93," copying the cassettes of his debut album "Feel the Music" under the table as quickly as he was selling them. What began as a side business grew over the years into his sole profession. To date, he has released seven albums by Butt Boy under his own label, Thrust Recordings, and soon ...
