Dan Treacy, the main singer and songwriter for the Television Personalities, has had a life as colorful as his band's style. Beginning in the 1970s, the TV Personalities set out on a musical journey that would encompass punk, new wave, twee, and shambling music, among other pop subsets. Along the way Treacy dropped out to devote himself to other things (drugs and prison among them), but he and the band returned in 2006 with MY DARK PLACES, the first TVPs release in eight years.
Treacy's songwriting can be alternately harrowing ("Ex-Girlfriends Club"), lovely ("Dream the Sweetest Dreams"), and novelty-oriented ("They'll Have to Catch Us First"). Yet it's always distinctively his own, and the TVPs sound, with its mixture of lo-fi indie, DIY, and art-pop, is as compelling and effervescent as ever.Uncut (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[N]obody else writes love songs like Treacy..." My Dark Places
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages ...
| | Iggy Pop Skull Ring CD (2003)
My Dark Places
$13.29 In terms of sonic fingerprints, 2003's SKULL RING is as close as solo Iggy Pop had come to the classic Stooges sound since the `70s. By this time, Iggy had reunited with the surviving Stooges, who back him on four cuts. Accordingly, those tracks are full of raw, punky fervor, but so are most of the other cuts here. In addition to his regular (non-Stooges) band, Iggy is backed variously by Green Day and Sum 41, who add a fresh punch to the old master's rock & roll drive. Peaches joins in for a couple of duets as well, which turn out to be some of the rawest, most agreeably unhinged moments on the album. SKULL RING ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
My Dark Places
$14.89 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on ...

| | Black Angels Passover CD (2006)
My Dark Places
$9.59 "Are they black?" --Iggy Pop. Formed in 2004 and hailing from the mescaline-infused outskirts of Austin, Texas, this gang of misfits has been on the road non-stop since their birth, performing at such venues as Sin-e, The Empty Bottle, and Spaceland. In early 2006, the band's self-titled debut EP was dubbed highly recommended in Spin Magazine, and received heavy radio airplay on such influential stations as KEXP and BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. In January 2006, the EP stood tall at #28 on the CMJ 200, a rare feat for a four-song introductory EP. This year will see the band spread their lysergic wings across the globe, perfoming live throughout North America, the UK, Europe, and Australia. The Black Angels reach high and stretch out over the ten songs on their introductory album "Passover" with trance-inducing guitar lines from Christian Bland, Nate Ryan's filthy medical dumpster bass, additonal four and six string ...

| | Kingston Trio Make Way!/Goin' Places CD (1992)
My Dark Places
$14.35 MAKE WAY was recorded in November, 1960 and released in January, 1961.
GOIN' PLACES was recorded at Capitol's Studio B, Los Angeles in January, 1961 and released in June, 1961. Includes liner notes.
These are the final two albums of the Kingston Trio in its original lineup.
While a modern-day listener may find folk music somewhat simple in content and approach, these factors were exactly what made the music so appealing in the late '50s and early '60s. No more than a guitar and a voice were needed to set forth ballads of love and murder. To many youths of the time, the music contrasted sharply with the materialism of their parents following World War II. Without really meaning to, the Kingston Trio spearheaded a revival that took the music way beyond college campuses and Greenwich Village. By the time the group recorded Make Way/Goin' Places, their last two albums with the original trio, they ...
