Upon first listen, Stereolab's 2006 full-length outing, FAB FOUR SUTURE, sounds strikingly familiar, with burbling keyboards, prominent bass, precise rhythms, subtle guitar, and, of course, Laetitia Sadler's detached and heavily accented vocals all squarely in place. Repeated playing, however, reveals the album (originally issued as a series of singles) to be more than just a rehash of past glories; while certainly not reinventing the French/British indie-rock group's meticulously designed wheel, the disc works to its strengths. Parts 1and 2 of the droning "Kyberneticka Babicka" bookend the record, while the chiming "Get a Shot of the Refrigerator" stands out as one of the ensemble's most dynamic latter-day tracks, recalling the finer moments of 2001's excellent SOUND-DUST. "Visionary Road Maps" carries a vaguely foreboding atmosphere, and Stereolab's perpetual eagerness to fuse a moody cinematic vibe with glitchy experimentation finds a nice outlet on "I Was a Sunny Rainphase." Although FAB FOUR SUTURE is unlikely to draw many new converts into the Stereolab fold, this assured 12-track set rewards patient fans with an album that slowly unveils its charms.
Stereolab: Laetitia Sadier (vocals); Tim Gane (guitar); Joe Watson (keyboards); Simon Johns (bass guitar); Andy Ramsay (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.67) - "Brighter cuts like 'Whisper Pitch' are entrancing in a Magic Eye kind of way, and 'Interlock' works up suave funk..." Uncut (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] beautifully layered, complex arrangements of trombone electronics and harmony vox." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "With each release they've loosened up more and more from their trademark early '90s minimalist motorik." The 2000s have not been especially kind to Stereolab. Their first album of the decade, 2001's Sound-Dust, marked a slight return to form but was still overrun by the indulgence that made their post-Dots and Loops material something of a chore to hear. And while 2002's ABC Music: The Radio 1 Sessions was a great collection of live performances from their heyday, it inadvertently ended up highlighting how much passion and innovation had dissipated out of the band's music since the mid-'90s. Worst of all, of course, was the tragic death of longtime member and friend Mary Hansen ...

Fab Four Suture CD music
$12.85 Stereolab are as experimental as ever on this, their eleventh album and first for 4AD. This time around, the sometimes obtuse group has decided to craft short pop songs, built around several series of drum loops and improvised puddles of vibraphones and keyboard. Most bands working from a base of improvisation would be content to sprawl and stretch; it's a testament to Stereolab's professionalism that they go from messy blueprints to a tight end product full of vibrant, sophisticated melodies.
Darkness haunts some of the details, like the trip-hop of "One Finger Symphony" ...

| | Zweiman, Judith & The Answers It Was 20 Years Ago Today CD (2009)
Fab Four Suture CD music
$16.45 It Was 20 Years Ago Today.... Was originally released as a self-titled cassette. From 1985 - 1990, Judith Zweiman, Duane Michael Tucker, Mark McColl and Tom Duvall (along with a cast of other great musicians) performed Sunday nights at Augie's, on Broadway and 106th Street in Manhattan, a well known Columbia University hangout. The band found themselves with a wacky group of loyal and devoted fans, where the cops would often show up at 3 A.M. to break up a bit too spirited sing-along rendition of "American Pie." (Today, Augieās is known as Smoke, immortalized in the TV series "The Sopranos."). They also played regularly at the Speakeasy and the Sun Mountain Cafe in Greenwich Village, and in countless bars and restaurants around the New York metropolitan area. Performing a mix of originals and cover tunes in the bars and pure originals in the ...
