| | Brother Dave Gardner DVD (2 Customer Reviews)
Brother Dave performs his classic routines such as Little David, The Motorcycle Story, The Ten Commandants, John And the Haunted House, Down Home Players, and many more. Also see Brother Dave sing his most famous songs along with his personal band performing top hits. This is the first full-length film of the late Brother Dave Gardner performing his Southern-loving folksy song-and-comedy routine. Though occasionally showing racist traces, Brother Dave Gardner openly advocated liberal freedoms, and he always had a warmly humorous take on the foibles of American life.

| | Brother Dave Gardner Rejoice Dear Hearts/Kick Thy Own Self CD (1998)
Brother Dave Gardner film
$13.59 This two-fer CD contains "Brother" Dave Gardner's debut (Rejoice, Dear Hearts!) and follow-up (Kick Thy Own Self) long-players for RCA Records. Gardner's impact as a social and political humorist has been largely obscured by time as well as the reality that a majority of his seminal recordings remained out of print for over 30 years. Although considered "regional humor," the impact of these recordings is confirmed, as each disc attained an unprecedented number five on the Billboard album charts during the months of June and August of 1960, respectively. Gardner's Southern drawl and common-sense tales and fables first garnered him several appearances on the Jack Paar Tonight Show beginning in 1957. So by the time that Chet Atkins -- then RCA's head of A&R in Nashville, TN -- commissioned these discs, "Brother" Dave Gardner was a nationally known figure. Both albums are structured to mirror Gardner's live sets as well as television appearances. So in addition to the various yarns and fables, there are also a few musical numbers -- most notably a percussion and vocal piece that Gardner calls "space music." This particular bit of improvisation had an incalculably profound influence on a young Andy Kaufman, according to Kaufman himself. In fact, his initial forays into standup comedy incorporated variations of this silly shtick. Although Gardner's more traditional comedy (i.e., jokes, fables, and stories) has been considered within the same subgenre as Andy Griffith and Jerry Clower, Gardner's ...

| | Suzanne Ciani Turning CD (1999)
Brother Dave Gardner DVD
$13.05 Personnel includes: Suzanne Ciani (piano); Chyi-Yu (vocals); Teva Bell (guitar); Steven Kindler (violin); Matt Eackle (flute); Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn); Michael Manring (bass); John Hernandez (drums). TURNING was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. Suzanne Ciani is one of the classiest new age performers of this -- or any other -- era. Turning is her 11th album and her first to include vocals. The title track has romantic lyrics written by Ciani and performed by Chyi Yu. It is the opening track and it is a grabber. That is a good start and Ciani builds on it strongly. Her classical training and her spiritual sensitivity ooze from every chord and every note on this CD. The gentle melodies are elegant and regal, the atmospheres are soft and warm, and the soundscape is lazy and seductive. And the nicest feature of this CD is Ciani herself. Her smiling countenance on the front of the disc is the first clue. In the liner notes she gives up the mystery: "I make these records firstly for myself...(and) to communicate with whomever will listen...(Turning) was a joy for me to make...for me and for you." Any work created with that 12-step philosophy is a guaranteed winner. This is an essential new age classic. It will appeal to fans of Lisa Lynne, Nancy Rumbel, Constance Demby, and Dean Evenson. ~ Jim Brenholts If the grand, stadium-sized sounds of John Tesh and Yanni are your bag, the music of Suzanne Ciani might throw you for a loop. Though she's a keyboardist composer whose mostly instrumental music is rooted in the romantic ...
| | Very Best Of Brother Dave Gardner CD (1999)
Brother Dave Gardner movie DVD
$9.09 Recorded live at Jones Hall For The Performing Arts, Houston, Texas in 1969. There are few (if any) comedians on par with "Brother Dave" Gardner. His countrified logic and fiercely Southern points of view became a huge hit in the late '50s and '60s, prompting several Top Ten long-players as well as numerous appearances on the talk and variety TV circuit. Gardner's preaching style of delivery is subversively coupled with his razor sharp wit and equally well-honed double-entendre. By the time of this 1969 set at Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Texas, Gardner's popularity had slightly derailed, after a minor brush with the law earlier in the decade. Likewise, his embrace of the late-'60s counterculture would isolate much of his oddly conservative audience base. As evidenced by the spirited and manic-paced routines featured on Very Best of Brother Dave (1999) -- first issued as Out Front in the '70s -- the comedian hasn't altered his liberal ideologies in the least. If anything, the changing times have allowed Gardner a sense of added freedom. Within the first few minutes he references then Alabama Governor George Wallace as "our Fuhrer," before commenting "if God ran [for President] I believe he'd only carry five states ... and they'd all be in the South!" He cleverly speaks to the civil unrest throughout the country and the Vietnam War at the same time, proudly proclaiming he is for minorities. While the two subjects might seem incongruous, ...

Potter keeps the pacing snappy in this musical comedy about two trumpet-playing buddies competing for gigs and for the heart of their lovely manager, Ellen Miller (Paulette Goddard). When Ellen gets hired and moves away, the two decide to leave their college campus and follow her to New York. Once there, they have numerous misadventures while auditioning for a spot in conductor Artie Shaw's band. Artie Shaw confidently plays himself, and Fred Astaire and Charles Butterworth are both sweet and funny as Danny and Hank, the feuding friends. Some of the film's notable songs include "Would You Like to Be the Love ...

Brother Dave Gardner DVD
$5.69 The Martin Lawrence comedy BLACK KNIGHT, sharply directed by Gil Junger, borrows its theme from A CONNECTICUT YANKEE AT KING ARTHUR'S COURT, with Mark Twain's Yankee being replaced by Jamal Walker (Lawrence). Jamal works at a decrepit California theme park in danger of being put out of business by a rival park. Cleaning Medieval World's moat, he falls into the water, only to recover in 14th-century England. There, Jamal meets Sir Knolte (Tom Wilkinson), a dissolute knight, before he stumbles into the court of the usurper King Leo (Kevin Conway). Jamal is impressed by what he thinks is the realism of the theme park; only after witnessing a gory beheading does he realize, with horror, where he really is. Jamal encounters the beautiful Victoria (Marsha Thomason) who is scheming to return ...
