| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Encore Collection
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps the first of her whirlwind, world-conquering career. When she did finally emerge from her self-imposed silence, she returned with Escucha, her first Spanish-language album in four ...

| | Incognito 100 Degrees And Rising CD (1995)
Encore Collection
$13.85 Singer Maysa Leak has left the fold, but Incognito's big, brassy British soul remains the same on 100 DEGREES AND RISING. Electric pianos lay down jazzy R&B vamps, strings sweep in with graceful accents, and horns play with and respond to the vocals, all over a variety of percolating funk beats. Put these parts together and you might call it acid jazz. It's a modern name for music that sounds like they used to make it--group-driven, roots-conscious and, above all, sophisticatedly soulful. And the superb new trio of vocalists that contributes to this, the band's fifth album, slides right in as part of the collective.
As the title implies, sweat drips and tension bubbles beneath the smooth surface of 100 DEGREES AND RISING in the tradition of all great urban soul. From the foreboding stabs of strings that kick off the opener, "Where Did We Go Wrong," like something out of the old sound of Philadelphia, Incognito honors that tradition. "Roots (Back To A Way Of Life)" announces itself with a blast of brass straight out of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star." "Too Far Gone," an electric piano ballad featuring a marvelously melancholic vocal turn by Barry Stewart, has the feel of early Stevie Wonder. And Incognito can simply lay back and groove too: "Barumba" is Spanish soul, and "After The Fall," one of the album's three instrumentals, has a breezy flugelhorn feel, like Chuck Mangione overhauled and reimagined by the Brand New Heavies.
