Pop
$9.55 Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash. There will no doubt be a lot of hoopla concerning the name Slayer have chosen for World Painted Blood. In many ways, it could have been called Reign in Blood Revisited. But the word "revisited " is the key. Some ...

| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Pop
$8.79 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter Wade Keusch, Sidh Solanki, Vada Nobles, Bill Blast, Future Cut, Stereotypes, Dan Strong, JK, Jay Fenix, and Affiliate. This mash-up of masterminds is a good thing; it offers the listener generous portions of put-together pop songs which color outside the lines in terms of genre. THE BRIDGE is the perfect launching pad for a solid career where she can further explore her possibilities as an artist, seeing as she appeals to the masses as well as the critics. Personnel includes: Anthony Braxton, Arizona State University Percussion Ensemble. Without a doubt, this is Anthony Braxton at his most abstract. It's as if he's been able to put into reality, some of the theories in his "Tri Axiom" writings. This piece is a play with a text, though it is not performed (it's more of an "inspiration" to the performers). It has to do with, of all things, building a ski resort, skiing, and its impact on the environment. Yes, this is Braxton being "political." The ten percussionists are not playing any discernible rhythm; the narrator is spouting something like gibberish, though it probably made some sense to the ensemble performing it (and to Braxton himself, of course). For the listener, it is reminiscent of some of the radio plays John Cage did in the late '40s with poet Kenneth Patchen ("The City Wears a Slouch ...

$12.15 Dub Terror is a London-based music project specializing in bass-heavy lethal dubplates and futuristic riddims production. It's conceived and operated by Italian producer Dubstudent who has partnerships with the biggest names of the UK reggae and dub circuit. 2005 sees Dub Terror release its first single on Neil Perch's Deep Root label, featuring UK reggae veteran Tena Stelin on the A side and Dub Terror inflammable cocktail on the B side. Personnel: Miti Adhikari (guitar, electronics); Stephen Wilkinson (guitar); Inyaki Yarritu (melodica, keyboards); Inyaki Yarritu (keyboards); Jonah Dan (percussion). Dub Terror is the brainchild of Italian dub producer Simone Lombardi, who does most of his studio work under the name Dubstudent. On his first full-length album he teams up with instrumentalists from around Europe and Asia along with a variety of reggae vocalists to create a brilliant and vibrant collection of modern reggae and dubstep compositions, about evenly divided between instrumentals and vocal numbers. Lombardi's signal achievement--apart from his winning way with a rhythm--is his ability to create sound structures that are rich and texturally complex but never unwieldy; even dark, foreboding tracks like the astringently dubsteppy "31st Century" and the melodica-driven "Digital Terror" have a nimbleness and flexibility in Lombardi's hands that would have done King Tubby or even Lee "Scratch" Perry proud. The vocal numbers are even better: "Shinobi," featuring Echo Ranks and Santanu, beautifully blends reggae and Middle Eastern elements, while "Turn the Tide" features a brilliant speed-rap performance by Brother Culture and "Technology" showcases both Echo Ranks and the very fine Jah Marnyah. "Mr Terror" is something of a mystery--no vocalist is credited, but there is a voice buried shallowly under the dubwise rhythm, and it sounds quite a bit like Horace Andy, though the dub effects are laid on too thickly to be certain. Overall, a brilliant debut from a major modern reggae talent. Dub Terror is the brainchild of Italian dub producer Simone Lombardi, who does most of his studio work under the name Dubstudent. | | Flight Of The Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky CD (2009) Digipak
Pop
$13.19 Personnel: Mickey Petralia (programming). Photographers: Brian Tamborello; Sam Erickson. After a glorious first season that earned the HBO show six Emmy nominations, Flight of the Conchords' second run didn't quite pack the same comedic punch. Some would say it was because the premise lost its luster, but it was mostly because the music just wasn't as strong. Most of the songs in Season One were pre-written and hashed out over years of stand-up, and for Season Two, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie were in a time crunch: forced to write a dozen or so funny songs and ten episodes from scratch. Considering the circumstances, FOTC's second Sub-Pop outing, I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY, has some worthwhile moments. In the R. Kelly-based "We're in Love with a Sexy Lady," Bret and Jemaine debate semantics while trying to determine if they're after the same lazy-eyed girl. "When'd you meet this lady?/Then./When?/Then./Right then?/Right then./Where?/There./Over there?/Over there./Over there there?/Over there there there," and so on, building up to Bret's ultimate question, "Was her name Brabra?" To which Jemaine replies, No I think it was Barbara."..."It was Barbara there's no such name as Brabra." It's the same straight-faced humor fans have grown to love. There's no satire quite as on-point as their tribute to David Bowie, but the duo busts out a hearty batch of sad-faced raps ("Hurt Feelings"), dance party hits ...
