| | Dave Koz Smooth Jazz Christmas CD (2001)
Killer Joe CD music
$9.45 A SMOOTH JAZZ CHRISTMAS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
Accompanied by some famous friends, mellow saxophonist Dave Koz delivers, as this album's title promises, holiday standards with a smooth jazz style. If you're the type that likes to nuzzle up with the likes of Kenny G or Lee Ritenour at Christmastime, then the soft sounds of Koz and his cohorts will be just what Santa ordered. In addition to the instrumental might of Koz and keyboardist David Benoit (a smooth jazz icon in his own right), there are ...
| | Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD (1977)
Killer Joe music CDs
$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow
Original soundtrack recording of the CBS television special recorded in 1965, tracks include 'O Tannenbaum', 'What Child Is This', 'My Little Drum', 'Linus and Lucy', 'Christmas Time Is Here' (instrumental), 'Christmas Time Is Here' (vocal), 'Skating', 'Hark, The Herald Angels Sing', ...
| | Vijay Iyer Historicity CD (2010) Digipak
Killer Joe songs
$12.89 Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. With HISTORICTY, he touches on many different levels of acumen, ...

$9.59 | | Miles Davis In A Silent Way CD (1969) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Killer Joe album
$6.75 John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint.
The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the inner tension in each of the extended pieces--Miles' "Shhh/Peaceful" and Zawinul's "In A Silent Way/It's About Time." Newcomer John McLaughlin's lyric, sitar-like guitar sets a serene mood on "Shhh," as bassist Dave Holland and drummer Williams essay a pulsating vamp. Miles' open horn is nuanced and graceful, combining long notes and cracked speech-like ...
| | David "Fathead" Newman Fathead Comes On CD (1963)
Killer Joe CD music
$9.65 This 1962 David "Fathead" Newman album picks up where 1961's STRAIGHT AHEAD left off. However, this release is slightly less bebop-oriented. Instead, Newman blends together hard bop with his own R&B roots. (He was a key member of Ray Charles's band for many years.)
FATHEAD COMES ON is a very bluesy album, but also contains its share of tricky melodies and ambitious arrangements. Highlights include "Unchain My Heart," which is the funkiest tune on the disc, and "Cellar-Groove," which begins with a clever train rhythm; here the locomotive sound is simulated by the repetitive hi-hat work of Charlie Persip and the boogie-woogie playing of pianist Norris Austin. The disc ends with "Lady Day," a tribute to Billie Holiday, which is, not surprisingly, a somber ballad. Hard-bop records from this era typically lean on the influence of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, but FATHEAD COMES ON is a statement unto itself, and therefore, a very compelling ...
| | Bob Dylan John Wesley Harding CD (1967) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Killer Joe music CDs
$27.39 Japanese pressing. Limited edition miniature LP-sleeve packaging.
Bob Dylan's eighth album followed a lengthy hibernation due to a motorcycle accident in which the singer re-evaluated his art. He emerged with a set of stark simplicity and heartfelt intensity, melding folk, rock, and country with a mesmerizing power that set off a huge back-to-basics movement in rock that lasted well into the next decade. A biblical purity encompasses the collection as Dylan paints graphic portraits of the disenfranchised--hobo, immigrant, drifter, messenger--articulating ...
