Indie rock girl group Magneta Lane could very well be a modern day version of the Shangri-Las. They have the sass appeal and chops to match the intensity of their debut album, Dancing with Daggers. In 2006, pulling off an original and sincere rock sound is a difficult task. Sure, this is only Magneta Lane's first studio full-length album, but their debut EP already proved that they would be taken seriously. There is absolutely no room for skepticism. Produced by MSTRKRT (Death From Above 1979 bassist Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P, the duo zeroes in on Magneta Lane's fiery presentation; Lexi Valentine's sultry vocals and brash guitar style are tailored to Nadia King's bumptious drum rolls and French's creeping bass lines. Each song is snappy, playful, and stylish, and that's what makes Dancing with Daggers work so well. Magneta Lane do not go over the top. They keep things clean in the midst of daydreaming about the mystical and the magical--dreams of European fiestas ("Carnival in Spain"), cheating on love for the sake of fame ("Artistic Condition,") and looking into life's crystal ball ("Secrets Aren't So Bad.") Even the album's artwork portrays a mysterious, Victorian era-influenced sense of space and time, complete with Magneta Lane in colorful corsets and ruffles while rich reds and pinks dress the album's background. The album's debut single, an anthemic gunslinger entitled "Broken Plates," gallops in with blazing guitars, once again supporting Magneta Lane's earnest effort in making an interesting and entertaining rock sound. They lead the pack of new millennium girl groups while giving their male counterparts some fierce competition. Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. Hailing from the '90s-resurgent Athens, GA, scene, unofficial home base to the Elephant 6 collective, Of Montreal is perhaps the least publicized band in the Elephant 6 stable but not because they make the least-worthy music. To the contrary, Cherry Peel is one of the most unabashedly pretty releases from that group, and, in fact, stands apart from most everything in the pop scene due to its simple, unassuming innocence. The vocals of songwriter Kevin Barnes are achingly heartfelt and puppyish, and his songs seem to spring directly out of childhood, or at least seem touched by a childlike yearning, so much so that you can't help feeling all fuzzy inside and perhaps desirous of hugging someone, maybe your mom, after hearing them. In April of 2001, the Jigsaw Seen's co-founders, Jonathan Lea and Dennis Davison, traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to perform two weeks' worth of acoustic shows in several cities in Great Britain (stopping off in Leeds, London, Wolverhampton, York, and Swansea and Cardiff, Wales). There were eight performances altogether, including a BBC Wales radio session; the sessions from their show at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff and the Patti Pavillion provided the sources for this EP. The duo performed a variety of songs from their extensive back catalog; these were later issued as a numbered, limited-edition, six-song live EP (enclosed with a "parking pass" for the BBC studios) entitled Perfformiad I Mewn Cymru (Performance in Wales). The EP was issued in August 2001 on the band's own Vibro-Phonic label. It begins -- after a smattering of polite applause and no introduction -- with several tracks from the band's Zenith album. The leadoff track, "Fiddlesticks,"sets the EP's mostly somber tone with a jangling acoustic guitar, Lea's E-Bowed guitar and Davison's plaintive vocals. His unadorned, unembellished vocals have long been one of this L.A. band's key elements; here, they're up front and center, well-miked and given the mostly acoustic presentation, stripped bare to the bone. "Letter to the Editor" finds the vitriol turned up a notch ("You're more than nothing, but less than something/Your days are numbered but no one's counting you out"). Two more caustic psych-folk numbers follow: "You Mind Is Like Mine" sounds directly influenced by Arthur Lee, circa 1966 or 1967, during his Love heyday, as does the next track, "I'm With You." The Pretty Things' heartbreaking "Loneliest Person" is the only cover here, from their S.F. Sorrow album. ...
