Contemporaries of the White Stripes, Detroit's bass guitar-less Soledad Brothers aspire to the grainy, trebly, raw rock sound perfected by the Stooges in the 1960s and early '70s, taking their musical cues from '60s garage rock, the MC5, and the early Rolling Stones. "Downtown Paranoia Blues" and "Crooked Crown" are quintessential Motor City rock & roll, while "Good Feeling" falls midway between perky sunshine pop and psychedelia. Speaking of which, on "Loup Garou," the band appear to have indulged wholesale in the pill that makes you larger, while the Incredible String Band-like "True to Zou-Zou" bears distinct traces of the one that makes you small.

Audio Mixer: Michel Toledo.

Recording information: Le Chalet.

Photographers: Ben Swank; Jo McCaughey.

Soledad Brothers: Johnny Walker (vocals, guitar); Dechman (lap steel guitar, banjo, sitar, cello, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, synthesizer, bass instrument, maracas); Oliver Henry (saxophone); Ben Swank.

Personnel: Oliver Henry (vocals, guitar, flute, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, piano, organ, percussion); Michael Roux (trumpet); Ben Swank (drums, congas, vibraslap, percussion).

Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The prolific Detroit foursome kicks out solid, harmonica-laced blues riffs without sounding derivative or cheesily nostalgic."
Uncut (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE HARDEST WALK sees them ditch revolutionary rhetoric altogether for powerhouse boogie."

Nelly Furtado Whoa, Nelly CDs  (2000)

Hardest Walk
CD $10.39  4.8 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
On WHOA NELLY, young songstress Nelly Furtado defies expectations by mixing and matching styles and approaches. The overriding production aesthetic includes R&B/hip-hop loops, beats, and samples mated with pure pop touches and some quirky electronic swoops and lurches. Furtado's songs combine hip-hop attitude with occasional Latin rhythmic accents, but the most striking aspect of this recording is the lyrics. While it wouldn't be difficult to imagine these ...
Best Years Of Our Lives
Steve Harley Best Years Of Our Lives CD  (1975) England

Hardest Walk
CD $10.49  5 stars
By his third album, Steve Harley had developed a strong grasp of how to combine his artistic ambitions with strongly crafted pop tunes that win the casual listener over to his artsy cause. The result was The Best Years of Our Lives, the most successful album of his mid-'70s heyday. This album was a big hit in his native England, thanks to the fact that it spawned two major hit singles. The first was "Mr. Raffles," a surreal yet romanticized portrait of a convention-flaunting outlaw. The odd lyrics work thanks to the phenomenal tune backing them up, which contrasts gentle verses built on piano and acoustic guitar with choruses that work in a surprising but slickly integrated reggae beat. The second and even more impressive hit was "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)," a romantic pop tune that pairs Harley's clever wordplay with a clever pop tune that boasts an inventive stop-start arrangement and a lovely flamenco-styled acoustic guitar solo. Although the rest of the songs on the album aren't as strong as these singles ("It Wasn't Me" has an atmospheric synthesizer-dominated soundscape, but lacks any memorable hooks or surprising twists in its arrangement), there are plenty of highlights for the Harley fan. Some of the standouts include "The Mad, Mad Moonlight," a driving rocker with humorous lyrics about a romantic encounter with an unlikely female suitor, and the title track, a touching acoustic ballad that highlights some of Harley's most direct and emotional lyrics. All in all, The Best Years of Our Lives is a fine, slickly crafted album that will delight Steve Harley enthusiasts and will also appeal to fans of glam-oriented 1970s English rock. ~ Donald A. Guarisco By his third album, Steve Harley had developed a strong grasp of how to combine his artistic ambitions with strongly crafted pop tunes that win the casual listener over to his artsy cause. Motown Legends: My Girl

Hardest Walk

All songs written or co-written by William Robinson or Norman Whitfield except "I'm Ready For Love" (Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Eddie Holland, Jr.), "Paradise" (Berry Gordy) and "I've Passed This Way Before" (William Weatherspoon/James Dean). The Motown Legends series are all compact, tight packages, and this ten-song compilation of Temptations sides is no exception. The tunes range from the pre-David Ruffin era to songs from the I Wish It Would Rain LP. Al Bryant sang with the Temptations when they cut "Paradise," a '50s-sounding number led by a young full-throated Eddie Kendricks doing a Frankie Valli imitation in his most hysterical falsetto. It begins with Melvin Franklin's deep bass and features some thumping harmonies. Fans unfamiliar with the pre-"The Way You Do the Things You ...
