Not Too Far From The Tree
$15.05 Personnel: Ricky Skaggs (vocals, mandolin); Tony Rice (vocals, guitar). Recorded at Arch Street Studios, Berkeley, California in 1980. Originally released on Sugar Hill. Includes liner notes by Jon Weisberger. Digitally remastered by David Glasser (Airshow Mastering, Boulder, Colorado). Skaggs & Rice is a lovely duet album between Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice. The two musicians run through a number of bluegrass classics, performing them in a spare, simple old-timey style, backed only by their guitar and mandolin. Not only are the performances breathtaking, ...

| | Tony Trischka Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas CD (1983)
Not Too Far From The Tree
$14.29 Personnel includes: Tony Trischka; Dede Wyland (vocals, guitar); Russ Barenberg (guitar); Matt Glaser (fiddle); Evan Stover (viola); Abby Newton (cello); Larry Cohen (electric bass). It is funny to listen to Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas and look back on the reviews that ran in conservative publications such as Old Time Music at the time the album came out. From the comments at the time, one would think this was a recording of the bombing of Dresden or instruments being smashed along the I-40. And 30 years later, the solo banjo piece "Avondale," short as it is, would no doubt start a fistfight were it to be played backstage at a banjo-picking contest. This is one of the most famous albums of what came to be known as progressive bluegrass, and while it is in the nature of many musicians to be progressive in their thinking, they sometimes find themselves caught in styles of music that don't encourage such an attitude. This is the situation Trischka found himself in when he and his cohorts started stretching many of the ideas of what might be appropriate to play in a combo whose instrumentation had been handed down from traditional bluegrass bands (i.e., mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, and so forth). Many of the sort of chord progressions and arrangements heard here have been copied shamelessly ad nauseum ever since, sometimes by ...

| | Kelly Pardekooper Brand New Bag CD (2007)
Not Too Far From The Tree
$12.95 Kelly Pardekooper: Atom Robinson (vocals); Park Chisolm (bass instrument); David Jacques (unknown instrument); Bernie Nau, Richard Medek. Personnel: Kelly Pardekooper (vocals, acoustic guitar); Teddy Morgan (electric guitar, organ, glockenspiel); Bernie Nau (accordion, harmonium); David Jacques (upright bass); John Penner (electric bass); Richard Medek (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Teddy Morgan. Recording information: Barrio East Studio, Nashville, TN; Peach Fork Studios, Pomeroy, OH; Wavelab Studio, Tuscon, AZ. This ten-song release from Kelly Pardekooper is a great album, mixing roots rock with plenty of passion and hooks, as is the case with the opening title track. Here the musician seems to fall somewhere between an adventurous ...
