| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are CD (1973)
Stormbringer music CDs
$16.15 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's sound. Lord's mastery was such that in addition to the impressive solos on "Place in Line," his sweeping runs are the highlight of the stop-and-go "Rat Bat Blue." On this roller coaster ride of an album, the members of Deep Purple come together best on "Our Lady," a five-minute-plus epic driven by Lord's churning organ and Ian Gillan's Wagnerian vocals.

| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Stormbringer songs
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern hippie charm in overdrive); captivatingly raw acoustic performances with him, Harris, and drummer N.D. Smart; and an instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that reveals just how ace a country band the Waycross longhair had.

| | Bela Fleck Natural Bridge CD (1982)
Stormbringer music CDs
$14.79 Prior to dazzling the jazz-fusion scene with his electrified Flecktones, Bela Fleck was one of the late 70s/early 80s pioneers of an acoustic fusion of bluegrass, folk, and swinging jazz. Truly a wonderful and daring musician, Fleck first set the bluegrass world on its collective ear with his superb banjo playing, which was as influenced by Charlie Parker as it was by Earl Scruggs.
Originally released in 1982, NATURAL BRIDGE lives up to its title--it bridges the worlds between bluegrass, in "Bitter Gap," and Django Reinhardt's bop-charged swing, in "Flexibility" and "October Winds." Often there are exchanges between both styles to the point where it's hard to hear where one starts and the other ends, as with "Crossfire." All the fine players featured here demonstrate amazing technique, warmth and versatility.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Includes liner notes by David Grisman.

Stormbringer album
$27.79 Recorded between 1977-1983. Includes liner notes by David Krebs.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process.
These recordings were taken from uncredited live shows recorded between 1977 and 1983. Unlike LIVE: BOOTLEG, the tracks included here are sonically cleaned-up and re-mastered. Post-production tinkering aside, the pure power of Aerosmith live comes through loud and clear on back-alley anthems like "Mama Kin" and "Lord of the Thighs." The band pays tribute to its influences with a version of the Yardbirds' "Train Kept a Rollin'" and the saucy blues novelty song "Reefer Head Woman." An added bonus is the inclusion of the previously unreleased "Major Barbra," a twangy psychedelic out-take originally slated for release on 1974's GET YOUR WINGS.
