Personnel: Michael Carvin (drums); Marcus Strickland, Branford Marsalis (saxophone); Carlton Holmes (piano); Dezron Douglas (upright bass). This volume in the ongoing series honoring unsung or little-known jazz performers features the eclectic drummer Michael Carvin, whose career has included time as a Motown session player as well as stints with artists including Pharaoh Saunders, Cecil Taylor, and Dizzy Gillespie. Accompanying noted musicians like the saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Marcus Strickland, Carvin's fiery playing propels his quintet through a galvanizing set of post-bop standards, including an incendiary "I'll Remember April," an Africanized "A Night in Tunisia," and a lyrical medley of "Prisoner of Love" and "Body and Soul." Michael Carvin has been instrumental in developing the careers of other percussionists as a coach (his preferred term over teacher), but the veteran drummer has had infrequent opportunities to record as a leader during his long career. This Marsalis Music CD, Carvin's first release in a decade, demonstrates his masterful musicianship, working with a trio of younger musicians who are obvious inspired by his playing. The sizzling introduction to "I'll Remember April" avoids typical approaches, powered by the leader's unusual percussive accents. Carvin revamps "The Lamp Is Low" with a funky swagger, while he also builds the tension playing the famous vamp to "A Night in Tunisia" with bassist Dezron Douglas and pianist Carlton Holmes, before tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland makes his entrance to state its main theme. This quartet is especially impressive with its moody, somewhat spacy setup of "You Go to My Head," hardly suggesting that the group will segue into a slow, romantic ballad set in waltz time. Producer Branford Marsalis makes a guest appearance on the "Prisoner of Love/Body and Soul" medley, though most of it is devoted to the latter standard. This outstanding date should prompt more frequent recording invitations to Michael Carvin. ~ Ken DrydenDown Beat (p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Calvin can do more with a few single strokes than any other drummer, and he shows his command of the minimalist approach on Charles Lloyd's 'Forest Flower'..." JazzTimes (p.145) - "Carvin drives the band with his relentless beat and irrepressible spirit. But he is also capable of playing brushes with Zen-like restraint." Marsalis Music Honors Series: Michael Carvin
$18.69 In 1924, Ed Kirkeby, the manager of the California Ramblers, decided to form a small group taken from the larger orchestra to play novelties and hotter jazz numbers. At first known as the Little Ramblers on its Columbia recordings, the quintet featured t
Goofus Five includes: Adrian Rollini, Jimmy Dorsey (saxophone); Red Nichols (cornet). Contains 25 tracks. As the 1990s drew to a close, Timeless Historical reissued a large number of recordings from the '20s and '30s by musicians both legendary and obscure, in a series coordinated by seasoned specialists Chris Barber, John R.T. Davies, and Brian Rust. One fascinating aspect of this label's catalog is an interconnected web of bands that all lead back to the California Ramblers, a Midwestern group which was among the most prolific studio ensembles of the '20s. While the full-sized Ramblers recorded for various labels as the Golden Gate Orchestra, the Varsity Eight, the University Six, and the Vagabonds, a scaled-down version of the band made records for Columbia as the Little Ramblers, for Pathe as the Five Birmingham Babies, and for Okeh, Odeon, and Parlophone as the Goofus Five. The instrument that gave the latter group its name was patented in France as a saxophone jouet or toy; it became known throughout Europe as the couesnophone; in England as the queenophone, and in the U.S. as the goofus. Shaped like a little sax, this free reed instrument emitted a sound similar to the mouth organ or the Hohner melodica. It was cousin to several 19th century hybrid instruments including the oboe-like harmonicor and the piston-keyed, cornet-shaped harmonitrompe. The keys of the goofus were laid out like two parallel keyboards, with one set generating ...
