This set was partly inspired by the band's reloca tion to Berlin from NYC after their 2004 album, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. The album comes with its own cinematic sister DVD with 3 film versions of the album, directed by band member Angus Andrew, Julian Gross, and filmmaker Markus Wambsganss. Each film is comprised of videos for every track on the album: 36 videos total. From backstage travelogues to surreal animation and mini sci-fi epics, Liars documents the process of recording, touring, then visually reinventing each track.
Liars: Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill, Julian Gross. A concept album based on fictional characters named Mt. Heart Attack and Drum, this mesmerizing record is the result of the art-rock ensemble Liars, formerly of Brooklyn, taking up residence in Berlin after the release of the critically divisive THEY WERE WRONG, SO WE DROWNED. Although DRUM'S NOT DEAD does rely heavily on pummeling percussion and chanted vocals, the undoubtedly challenging outing is quite nuanced and dynamic, with many of the Mt. Heart Attack tracks (particularly "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack") conveying a compulsive energy, and the Drum-related compositions (see the droning "Hold You, Drum") conjuring up a meditative dreaminess. The CD is accompanied by a DVD that presents three short films (two of which are directed by band members), each one following the arc of this fascinatingly strange excursion. Continuing to explore the noise rock/prog rock fusion they pioneered with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, Liars return with another concept album, Drum's Not Dead. The idea behind this album is even more abstract than They Were Wrong's conflation of witch trials and pagan rituals: Drum's Not Dead revolves around the yin-yang relationship of two forces in the creative process, personified as Mt. Heart Attack (who represents stress and self-doubt) and Drum (the embodiment of creative energy and productivity). While this is an intriguing concept, unfortunately the actual music doesn't always live up to it. Drum's Not Dead borrows pages from the urban-pagan, atmospherically noisy playbooks of both Black Dice and Animal Collective, although the album isn't as evocative as the former band's work nor as cuddly-weird as the latter's. Nothing here is nearly as abrasive, or immediate, as "There's Always Room on the Broom" -- throughout the album, Liars stay away from their comfort zone of dynamic noise-rock. This "quiet is the new loud" philosophy is admirable, but too often, Drum's Not Dead sounds oddly blurred and subdued. Interestingly enough for an album that uses mountains as a motif, its terrain is actually more like a valley, starting and ending with powerful tracks and dipping sharply in the middle. Drum's Not Dead begins with "Be Quiet Mt. Heart Attack," which is not only the album's best track, but one of the finest things Liars have ever done. With dark, shimmering guitars that recall EVOL-era Sonic Youth and minimal but monumental drumming, it's full of beauty and brooding that is immediately exploded by the growling drones and heavy, tribal polythrhythms of "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack," which conjures up images of fiery, twirling drumsticks and sinister rites. It's tempting to say that Drum's Not Dead gets its point across in just the first two tracks, but that would ignore how well "To Hold You, Drum" mixes noise and whispery negative space and sets up the album's surprisingly sweet, hopeful resolution, "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack," which also ranks among the band's finest work. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned might have been too densely packed with ideas and sounds, but Drum's Not Dead errs in the opposite direction: too many tracks feel like variations on the album's themes that don't really go anywhere. Though there are many moments of primal energy (the eerie, hypnotic taunting of "Hold You Drum," "Drum and the Uncomfortable Can"'s climactic doom) and beauty (the flowing water and brooding meloRolling Stone (p.99) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The album is saturated with eerie guitar balladry for a hallucinogenic vibe that recalls Radiohead, Sonic Youth and Brian Eno..." Uncut (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Liars still favour punishing percussion....Andrew attempts to write more conventionally structured songs, simultaneously revealing a new vulnerability." The Wire (p.52) - "[T]heir rethinking of rock instrumentation grounds the music through a kind of unanswerable simplicity....These tracks are pinned down by a swampy battery of tom-toms and kick drums." Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he trio's chanting, loops and metal-bashing framework is now fleshed out by some beautiful ambient-noise balladry." | | Loose Fur Born Again In The U.S.A. CD (2006)
Drum's Not Dead
$12.69 Recording information: Sear Sound Studios, New York, NY; Wilco Loft. The eponymous first album from Loose Fur, the Wilco side project that includes Jeff Tweedy, Glenn Kotche, and uber-producer/art-rocker Jim O'Rourke, was seen by many as a safe house for further indulging the sonic experiments found on Wilco's YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. This time out, the band switches from arty side-project to ragged super-group, and cuts loose to play some rock & roll. As the album's title suggests, there's a satirical, irreligious tendency at work here, but the focus is on crunchy riffs and tight, well-crafted songs that run the gamut from lilting alt-country to straight ahead 4/4 guitar-rockers. Fans will enjoy hearing Tweedy play bass on a number ...
| | TV On The Radio Return To Cookie Mountain CD (2006)
Drum's Not Dead
$9.99 TV on the Radio: Tunde Adebimpe, David Andrew Sitek. On its 2006 album, RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN, the Brooklyn-based post-punk group TV on the Radio manages that rare feat of becoming more adventurous and accessible at the same time. While this record isn't a major departure from its eclectic predecessor (the lauded DESPERATE YOUTH, BLOODY THIRSTY BABES), it is notably more cohesive, and even boasts a guest appearance by David Bowie, who slinks into backing vocals on the R&B-tinged "Province." By combining unpolished loops and stuttering beats with shoegazing guitar textures, the ensemble creates an utterly unique sound, particularly when the deep, expressive voice of Tunde Adebimpe and the falsetto singing of Kyp ...

Drum's Not Dead
$10.15 Composers: Erin Fein; Mary Wraight. Headlights: Tristan Wraight, Erin Fein, Brett Sanderson. Personnel: Dorothy Martirano (violin); Kristen Johns (cello); Nick Sanborn (accordion). Audio Mixers: Brett Sanderson; Adam Schmitt. Recording information: Bionic Studios; Pogo Studios; The Farmhouse. Arranger: Nick Sanborn. When the first song on the Headlights' debut full-length, "Your Old Street," begins -- a string group pulling and bowing in melancholic unison, a soft, plaintive cymbal, a lonely guitar -- it seems as if the tone -- sad, pretty indie pop -- has been set for the rest of the album. Yes, there are some hints of electronic instrumentation in the tinny keyboards and the guitar even gets aggressive as the song comes to a close, but mostly it's just another well-crafted pop song, sung perfectly by Erin Fein and Tristan Wraight, with the right mix of orchestration and empty space, of despair and joy. In fact, the songs or choruses in which the two singers share vocal duties are by far the strongest moments on Kill Them with Kindness (though ...
