During his final months with Miles Davis' group, John Coltrane participated in a number of recording sessions for Prestige independently of Davis. This album is but one such recording. In 1958, when this recording was made, Coltrane may have been at his creative peak. During this period, his work began to transcend "bebop" and "cool," anticipating even more modern developments in jazz-changes that would affect a whole generation of musicians.
On KENNY BURRELL WITH JOHN COLTRANE, we hear the two jazz masters creating time-honored renditions of tunes such as "Why Was I Born," a duet that highlights the musicians' ability to not only savor each note, but to take a rather plaintive composition and develop it organically. Burrell, Coltrane, and company swing "Freight Trane" with great authority, thanks to the drumming acumen of Jimmy Cobb. On this tune, Coltrane uses a variety of sudden flourishes and lyrical lines, while Burrell comps chords in simpatico. Most importantly, this album represents the one-time chemistry of Burrell and Coltrane. That alone makes this CD a must.

This is drummer Israel's third recording as a leader. He uses his Organic trio and quartet to showcase music written by Chicago natives, himself included. Guitarist Marvin Sewell and organist Larry Goldings contribute, as does saxophonist Joe Lovano who shows up on three tracks. The music ranges from modern mainstream, instrumental blues or pop, to a zinger or two not necessarily thought of as organ combo material. Sewell is generally a joy to hear, as underdocumented as he is. His soulful inflections recall several guitarists, yet he retains his own identity. He offers down-home lines during Johnny Griffin's slow and bluesy "Nice & Easy," and during the more simmering "Battery Blues" by Julian Priester. Unfortunately he fluffs the tricky melody of Grant Green's "Green's," but his good intentions remain. Goldings' corn-fed, natural sound on organ is a bit buried -- more reticent than usual, but he's a good foil. For example, Donny Hathaway's "Valdez in the Country" implies samba patterns while Israel's brushes and Sewell's guitar weave their way in and Goldings ...

Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" likewise was converted from a German children's song.
This Memphis native's choice of artists to cover was equally intriguing and includes Hollywood legend Al Jolson ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), New Orleans soul shouter Smiley Lewis ("One Night"), blues great Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog"), and country titan Hank Snow ("[Now And Then There's] A Fool Such As I"). Further testimony of Presley's long-lasting appeal is the inclusion of the JXL Radio Edit Remix of "A Little Less Conversation," a UK #1 that not only enabled Elvis to have more chart-toppers than The Beatles, but also became a hit in a number of other countries including the United States.
RCA and the Elvis estate made no bones about their intention on replicating the blockbuster success of the Beatles' The Beatles 1 with their own single-disc collection of number one hits -- hence, the 2002 release of Elvis: 30 #1 Hits. The idea of collecting all the number one hits is simple enough, but there are problems inherent with the concept, not the least of which is that RCA did this once before. Unlike the Beatles, who went through numerous changes in just seven years of recording, Elvis had nearly three times as many years' worth of material and hits to choose from. Tom Harrell has been widely admired for his skills both as a player and composer, which he manages in spite of an ongoing battle with schizophrenia. These sessions were recorded not long after he left the Phil Woods Quintet, where he played to critical acclaim for six years. Ten potent originals are heard on this reissue, which includes two bonus tracks omitted from the initial release (both of which appeared on the CD Visions). With the potent rhythm section of pianist James Williams, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Adam Nussbaum, plus guitarist John Abercrombie, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and soprano saxophonist Dave Liebman on selected tracks, every track stands out. The session explodes out of the gate with the fiery "Eons," showcasing Harrell, Lovano, and Williams (the latter who sadly passed away in 2004 from cancer). The trumpeter's soft bossa nova "Sail Away" has long since become one of his best known compositions; this version features Harrell at his peak.
