Nova Lux album
$13.05 If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with the epic music on the disc ...

Nova Lux music CDs
$13.09 Instrumentals in metal are nothing new (heck, Metallica used to put one on every record!), but what is a new occurrence is the veritable wave of purely instrumental bands that seem to have spewed out of nothing in the waning years of the first decade of the ol' 21st. Some, like Pelican, are bands that have just simply brushed aside the need for a vocalist, letting guitar parts handle such melodies and harmonies and keeping a basic song structure that is, for the most part, band-driven. Others, like the "guitar collective" that is Tone, are more, well, collective in sound, sort of a wall of music, with guitars layered on top of guitars, all playing the same chord changes to produce something that sounds more like heavy-duty ripples emanating from a common center. If there is one band that manages to capture the grey area that the aforementioned bands create between them, it is ...

| | Luis Garay Percussion World Sacumba CD (2003)
Nova Lux album
$17.09 Born in Argentina, but a U.S. resident since 1992, percussion master Luis Garay obviously likes the sound of the drum. Along with three other percussionists, he explores a number of Afro-Latin styles on this disc, getting deep inside the sound, often with some stunning playing (just listen to some of the work on the samba "Sambazo," for example). And even if you're not a lover of rhythm standing virtually alone, there's enough going on here to entrance your ears. Especially enthralling is the dense "Afro-Chin," which evolves beautifully, with some stunning marimba work that grows in intensity all the way to the conclusion. In fact, the marimba tracks are some of the loveliest here, in part, perhaps, because they do offer melody, as on "Marimba Azucar." But it's always the rhythms at the heart, and with these excellent players, they're multi-layer, one springing off another (and recorded with great clarity -- you can pick out every beat of each instrument). They make even the most complex things, such as "Afro 11/8" sound perfectly natural, no small feat, while propelling other pieces at a fiery pace. And the Argentinean flavor of "Chacara" is irresistible. Without ever being academic, Garay instructs -- and entertains. ~ Chris Nickson
Described in the Washington Post as a "percussionist of marvelous virtuosity", Luis Garay was born in Cordoba, Argentina, where he was principal timpanist for the Cordoba Symphony Orchestra. Residing in the US since 1992, he is percussion soloist and leader of Luis Garay Percussion World, a popular world percussion performing ensemble in the Washington D.C. area. Throughout his 30 year career, this classical, jazz, and Afro-Latin multi-percussionist has performed throughout the Americas and Europe. He has received many prestigious honors such as recognition by the U.S. Government as an "Artist of Exceptional Ability," a performance for Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, the Gold Medal from the International Rotary Club, the Team Leadership Award of the Group Study Exchange Program and a fellowship from Amalia Lacroze de Fortab at The Inter-American Music Friends and at the Organization of American States and The Catholic University of America and Margot Fonteyn. He has accompanied numerous top artists in concert and on recordings and is a well known percussionist in the nation's capitol. Some of Mr. Garay`s performances include the Kennedy Center, The Organization of American States, Department of State, Smithsonian Institution, The Argentine Embassy, DAR Constitution Hall & Washington National Cathedral, and the Chinese Embassy. ...
