While Beyond the Sun was seen by many as a lovely if unintended farewell to Billy Mackenzie following his tragic demise, in truth it was a compromise release, drawing on a variety of sessions and pared down by record company wishes to reflect the darker, piano-based songs he had been working on through much of the '90s, primarily with Steve Aungle. The 2004 reissue program on One Little Indian provided a new way to look at Mackenzie's last years, with the material on Beyond the Sun split between two releases. Auchtermatic covered the electronic/techno work, while Transmission Impossible, much like Beyond the Sun itself, focused on Mackenzie's torchier side. Rather than simply re-release those songs as they stood, however, his estate and their collaborators sought instead to release the songs as originally recorded, lacking the posthumous overdubs on the Nude version, as well as including a variety of material that had either surfaced elsewhere or not yet at all. The result is an hour-long winner, starting with a version of his killer take on the classic "Wild Is the Wind," originally featured in a variety of early-'90s performances. Another cover, a nod to Mackenzie's open fandom of Sparks via a quietly sung take on "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth," had turned up on the Eurocentric collection but makes more sense here given the piano/violin/vocal arrangement. "Liberty Lounge," "When the World Was Young," and "Sing That Song Again" recur from Eurocentric, the former providing some amusingly downbeat rock & roll meat. The rest, drawn from Beyond the Sun -- only one, the jaunty cabaret-flecked "Satellite Life," had not yet been released before -- make the case even more clearly that all Mackenzie needed was a microphone and a melody to deliver stunning, emotional songs -- the more familiar overdrive of his early-'90s hit singles was simply part of his ability, not the defining moment of it. The multi-track choir concluding "Nocturne Seven," the dramatic turns of the arrangement for "Fourteen Mirrors," the moving beauty of "Beyond the Sun" itself -- each testify to the great loss of Mackenzie's unique gifts. ~ Ned Raggett

Transmission Impossible songs
$13.69 The kids from Philly continue their widescreen explorations into the street characters and urban landscapes they have been moving toward during their past three albums. Self-recording with their own funds and without major-label input hasn't cheapened the group's approach. In fact, this is arguably their best-sounding disc, with instruments reverberating in multiple overdubs and frontman/lyricist David Bielanko's aching vocals -- somewhat like the Del Fuegos' Dan Zanes -- as clear, soulful, and potent as if he's in the room with you. Theirs is the shimmering, noir world of outsiders, junkies, loners, and doomed lovers that Bruce Springsteen (who guested on ...

| | Tom Waits Mule Variations CD (1999)
Transmission Impossible songs
$11.49 MULE VARIATIONS won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Hold On" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Since 1993's BLACK RIDER album consisted of music written by Waits and William Burroughs to accompany a Robert Wilson play, hard-liners consider '92's BONE MACHINE to be the last "official" Waits album before the seven-year wait that ended with the release of MULE VARIATIONS. Unsurprisingly, Waits lives up to the expectations engendered by that lengthy wait. In fact, there are more stylistic threads connecting MULE VARIATIONS to BONE MACHINE than to BLACK RIDER.
The chugging rock drive of the opener "Big in Japan" (featuring Primus) recalls "Goin' Out West." "What's He Building?" is a wonderfully devilish spoken word piece a la Ken Nordine (one of Waits' heroes) much akin to BONE ...

Transmission Impossible album
$11.49 Close your eyes as you listen to Bleeding Through's second album, 2004's This Is Love, This Is Murderous, and you'll hear vicious melodic death metal in the Killswitch Engage mode, but with even harsher croak-vocals backed by subtle synthesizer chords. Open them and you'll stare in confusion at the sight of a bunch of eyeliner loving Mike Ness disciples, whose choice of wardrobe would normally suggest some lame mutation of teen girl-friendly kiddie-punk. Well, as your granny used to say, "looks can be deceiving," and that certainly proves the case here as massive death ...
