| | Bob Washhut Songbook CD (1999)
That Aldrich Feeling music CDs
$13.39 Bob Washut, a musical product of Northern Iowa University, gathered together two close friends to make a piano trio CD. Of the 11 tunes, seven are Washut compositions. All of his compositions are musical displays of Washut's admiration for specific individuals. Some of those honored are well-known jazz musicians, like Lee Konitz and Rufus Reid, and one song is a tribute to his bass player, Mark Urness. The remaining honorees are individuals who had a positive effect on Washut at some point during his life. The other songs on the play list are by composers whom Washut admires and respects: Alan Broadbent, Andy Razaf (in collaboration with others), and Duke Ellington -- not a bad trio themselves. The final piece on this album is by Urness.
Most of the Washut compositions are introspective and lean toward the melancholy, but there's a bright number thrown in to break the mood, like "Especial-Lee." Although pleasant enough, none of Washut's pieces is a breakthrough or will likely be played by anyone else. They are remindful of the music favored by George Winston on his early Windham Hill albums. The Broadbent "Waiting for Charlie" is included because it has one of Washut's all time ...
| | Cecil Taylor Unit Mixed CD (1998)
That Aldrich Feeling songs
$12.65 This collection contains the complete EVERYWHERE by Roswell Rudd Sextet as well as tracks Cecil Taylor recorded for Gil Evans' INTO THE HOT.
Recorded in New York, New York on October 10, 1961 and July 8, 1966. Tracks 1-3 originally issued as Impulse (9). Tracks 4-7 originally issued as Impulse (9126). Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna and Nat Hentoff.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson using 20-bit technology at MCA Studios.
This CD serves up two very different slices of free jazz. The first three cuts are by The Cecil Taylor Unit, and were recorded in 1961 (originally issued on a Gil Evans album called INTO THE HOT). The last four cuts are by the Roswell Rudd Sextet and were recorded in 1966 (originally issued as ROSWELL RUDD'S EVERYWHERE). The Cecil Taylor selections really represent the second phase in his recording career. His first few albums are avant-garde jazz, straining against the jazz idiom. This group is really playing Cecil Taylor music, whatever that is. On "Bulbs" Cecil plays shattering piano over a fleet groove played by Sunny Murray (drums) and Henry Grimes (bass). The tune is exciting, cryptic, and loaded with subtle references to pop, soul and jazz. "Mixed" ...

| | Brubeck Brothers Quartet Intuition CD (2006)
That Aldrich Feeling music CDs
$14.45 Oftentimes when the offspring of famous musicians decide to become musicians they try to distance themselves stylistically from the ground their parents tread. Such is not the case with drummer Dan Brubeck and his bass-playing brother Chris. The Brubeck Brothers drink from the same cool post-bop stream as their famous father Dave, playing groove-oriented jazz with plenty of rigorous musicianship, which manifests itself in both structure and improvisation. Yet the Brubeck Brothers are clearly versed in funk, fusion, and ballads, and all of these elements come into play on 2006's INTUITION. Guitarist Mike Demicco, and pianist Taylor Eigsti flesh out the core quartet on this highly enjoyable outing.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Authors: Jack DeJohnette; Doug Ramsey.
The Brubeck Brothers Quartet: IntuitionChris Brubeck, trombone, bass; Dan Brubeck, drums.Mike DeMicco, guitar; Taylor Eigsti, pianoKoch International Classics KIC-CD-7689Format: CDIntuition is a treat: the compositions are fresh, melodic and memorable, and are rendered with sublime expertise and considerable joy. From guitarist Mike DeMicco's swinging “West of One” through the tipsy second-line groove of “Parade du Funk” and the jubilant “Jump Up, Get Down” and “Change Up,” jazz doesn't get any jollier than this. Chris has a blessedly impec¬cable tone on fretless bass, and shows considerable wit in his use of slide and vibrato on both guitar and trombone. Dan's cowbell provides its own sly humor, although his drum chops are as serious as they ever get. And there’s the dazzling precocity of pianist Taylor Eigsti: just a young teenager when this was recorded, he's already ...
| | Patrick Lamb Soul Of A Free Man CD (2007)
That Aldrich Feeling songs
$12.85 When veteran saxophonist Patrick Lamb called his excellent early 2007 release with vocalist Patsy Meyer Don't Get No Better, he was clearly thinking of a clever title, not a truly accurate assessment of his burgeoning solo career. While best known as a backing saxman for Bobby Caldwell and Diane Schuur, he's fully liberated as a cool and pop-R&B singer on this well titled follow-up, which was released just a few months after his dual project with Meyer. Relegating his tenor and soprano ...
