Personnel: Christian Scott (trumpet); Christian Scott ; Donald Harrison (alto saxophone); Walter Smith III (tenor saxophone); Zaccai Curtis (Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer organ); Zaccai Curtis (Fender Rhodes piano); Luques Curtis (acoustic bass); Matt Stevens (guitar); Thomas Pridgen (drums). Audio Mixer: Ron Davis. Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (02/09/2005-02/11/2005). The young New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott combines jazz and hip-hop to smoothly sophisticated effect on this sophomore, Grammy-nominated 2006 set. His accomplished solos are underpinned by a supple, sympathetic band that conveys late-1960s Miles Davis in its determinedly after-hours feel. The smooth jazz tendencies hinted at on "So What" are undercut by the spare colorations of the title track and the tense undertones of "Suicide," while on "Paradise Found," Scott and ensemble show that they're also capable of a finely understated lyricism. Christian Scott is the nephew of veteran alto saxophonist Donald Harrison and like his uncle, a native of New Orleans. He shows promise as a soloist, but none of his compositions and arrangements on his debut recording as a leader is particularly memorable. His heavy reliance on hip-hop and R&B influences rather than jazz results in a sameness that proves distracting from his solos. Zaccai Curtis' Fender Rhodes is pretty much relegated to providing backgrounds, while Luquis Curtis' dull bass vamps and the annoying, predictable drum lines demanded of Thomas Pridgen undermine the playing of Scott and tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III. Even guest appearances by Harrison on several tracks, including a surprisingly bland treatment of Miles Davis' "So What," simply miss the mark. Skip this disappointing release. ~ Ken DrydenJazzTimes (p.79) - "REWIND THAT shows him to be a striking trumpeter -- the breathy tone he often uses, so tenuous it can resemble a flute, stands out in an ensemble, and he shows a natural knack for phrasing, whether playing quietly or brassily." | | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Rewind That
$8.49 Personnel: Nathan Calvin (vocals). Audio Mixer: Terry Date. Recording information: Studio Litho, Seattle, WA. Editor: Ingrid Erickson. Arranger: Chris DeGarmo. It makes sense that Terry Date produced Catch Without Arms, Dredg's second record for Interscope. The producer is a veteran of Deftones albums, and it's that band's rich but still rocking palette that's the intent here. And they succeed. Like past Dredg releases Catch has a conceptual flow. But openers "Ode to the Sun" and "Bug Eyes" focus the grandeur and meandering pace of the band's past work around effective melodies and a steadiness in the rhythm. The choruses emphasize the Bono/Chino Moreno in Gavin Hayes' vocal, and when the rhythm drops out for ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Rewind That
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist ...
