With the title An Introduction to Herbie Mann, the average consumer would naturally consider this to be a best-of collection. It isn't. This is actually a reissue of Fuel 2000's Afro-Jazziac Bop, which captures a 1958 recording featuring Machito & His Orchestra with Mann on flute, followed by a quintet session led by Mann and Buddy Collette a year earlier. While these 20 selections of Afro-Cuban jazz and hard bop are top-notch, if this were an actual introduction to Mann's music, it would have to include something from the flutist's Atlantic output from the '60s, like "Comin' Home Baby" or "Memphis Underground."
