The Invisible Session are Luciano Cantone (a co-founder of Schema Records as well as producer and lyricist) along with Paolo Fedreghini and Marco Bianchi, who also composed, arranged and performed the music on this album. The producer's profound and spiritual pathway, together with its resulting vision, crossed with the two musicians' affinity in the same investigation. After months spent collaborating, the three decided to channel their collective ideas into music. Once common inspiration was found, it became the guiding star to the "invisible session". The ten resulting compositions are where various music genres interconnect. The trio shaped a project whose strength resides in rhythms and contaminated Jazz. For those of you who crave the Larry Young-Grant Green Blue Note sides of the '60s, this should sufficiently whet your appetite. Tenor saxophonist Weiskopf has come up with a winning formula, adding his deft, fluid, literate tenor to the Larry Goldings organ trio; Goldings on Hammond B-3, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Bill Stewart on drums. The combination is quite likable, Goldings and Bernstein particularly have clearly defined roles which they execute with verve and passion. Weiskopf, 33 years old at the time of this recording, does not display influences on his sleeve, nor does he have a distinctive voice, but his playing is all his own without resorting to copped licks. He's quite good, and wrote all save one of these nine selections. The more urgent numbers are the ones that stand out, because on them, there's not only a shared interest in swinging hard, but a kineticism that seems to flow naturally with uptempos. Many jazz purists need a serious reality check when it comes to what they expect from jazz vocalists. Even in the 21st century, jazz purists continue to insist that jazz singers who grew up in a rock/R&B era -- and that includes Gen-X and Gen-Y as well as the baby boomers -- should remain untouched by rock or R&B and avoid any popular music that didn't come from Tin Pan Alley.
