| | Bobby Watson Horizon Reassembled CD (2004)
Metalix
$9.69 For his second Palmetto Records release, saxophonist Bobby Watson reassembles his 1990 hard bop quintet known as Horizon. On Horizon Reassembled the quintet that fans referred to as "the happy band" revisit their commitment to the music and to themselves on such great songs as "Pere," "Xangongo," "Eeeyyess," and "Horizon Reassembled." The set opens with "Lemoncello," a hard bop gem that allows each soloist lots of room to express his ideas and themes. On "Pere," pianist Edward Simon sets up a tapestry of sound on his original contribution, by rolling his chords rhythmically instead of using the typical, punctuated style of comping. He also offers one of the best solos on the set through his blazing piano talk on the title track. Bassist Essiet Essiet brings his African roots to "Xangongo." His exciting ...

| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Metalix
$87.89 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. ...
| | Chris Potter Underground CD (2006)
Metalix
$14.55 Chris Potter took his electric band, Underground, on the road throughout 2005, trying out new material and working through some of his gems. This Sunnyside date is the first time this band has been in the studio together. Underground features Potter playing tenor saxophone exclusively, guitarist Wayne Krantz (in a rare sideman role to be sure), Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and drummer Nate Smith. Right, that's not an error: there's no bassist. The program is diverse, featuring six Potter originals and some startling choices for covers: Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom," Lennon and McCartney's "Yesterday" (which also features Adam Rogers on an additional guitar), and the Radiohead tune "Morning Bell." The obvious question is whether this a "fusion" record. The answer would have to be yes, given the knottiness of the arrangements, the twisting and turning original tunes, and the phrasing between Krantz and Taborn. But then, that's an obvious answer. The less obvious one is that this is fully an electric jazz record with plenty of groove and some swing in the mix, too. Potter is a fine composer ...
| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Metalix
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to ...

| | Skip Martin Miles High CD (2006)
Metalix
$14.09 The idea of Skip Martin’s first solo jazz project was pure and simple – “it was just time”.With 26 album releases as lead vocalist with Dazz Band, Kool & the Gang and his own solo projects, Skip wanted to record a project where he did his ‘singing’ through his trumpet. “I’ve recorded with both groups in the horn section but never as a solo instrument” stated Skip. The result is ‘Miles High’ filled with hip, cool, funky, smooth jazz grooves. “You’ll definitely come away ... with ... a sense of what Miles might be doing musically if he were still with us.”(Scott O’Brien for smoothjazz.com).‘Are You Ready’ the debut single, with Skip on trumpet and vocals, Wayman Tisdale on bass guitar and Ricky Lawson on drums is “...a laid back blend of classic styles. If Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd were in the same band they would open their set with this tune...” (GeneHarris, Jr., MBA and Cat Lee for GrooveDoctorsRadio.com).Ronnie Laws appears on sax on the ‘Smooth Sailing’ track in a beautiful trumpet and sax duet – ranging from sultry grooves to profound narratives.‘Miles ...
