R&B crooner Avant is as smooth as ever on DIRECTOR, but this time around his emotive, passionate vocal stylings are supported by cutting-edge production that's sharper than ever. While Avant is not averse to getting down and dirty when the situation arises, he's a romantic at heart, and many of the tunes here find him exulting in the glow of love with a rhapsodic zeal that's uncommon among many of his contemporaries. Alternately declaring himself a "Grown Ass Man" and a "Director" of carnal activities, Avant pulls off a marriage of slow-jam heavy breathing and visceral, up-front beats that makes DIRECTOR satisfying on both sonic and sensual levels.
Personnel: Avant (vocals); The Pussycat Dolls, Nicole Scherzinger (vocals); Lil Wayne, Lloyd Banks (rap vocals); Jermaine Dupri (spoken vocals).

Purchase Director CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Donell Jones Journey Of A Gemini CD (2006)
Director
$8.99 The fourth album by urban R&B artist Donell Jones rivals his 2002 commercial breakthrough, LIFE GOES ON. There are no radical stylistic departures here, which is a good thing for Jones fans. JOURNEY OF A GEMINI is a solid urban contemporary effort, suffused in equal measure with the aesthetics of hip-hop and Jones's silky-smooth, old-school crooning.
JOURNEY enjoys top-notch production from the Underdogs and Tim & Bob, among others, and the tunes find a comfortable middle ground between uptempo club tracks and honey-sweet bedroom ballads. There are plenty of strong grooves to dig into, and Jones is suave and seductive as always.

| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Director
$13.15 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, ...

| | Mary J Blige Breakthrough CD (2005)
Director
$10.49 The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on feelings of strength and weakness in love. But whether waxing romantic ("Can't Get Enough") or detailing the travails of the heart ("Baggage"), Blige lays down elastic R&B vocal lines that are second to none. Even a seemingly unlikely duet with Bono and U2 on "One" comes across beautifully, adding a new dimension to that familiar tune.
After her somewhat lukewarm 2003 release LOVE & LIFE, Mary J. Blige returns to her rightful place as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul with 2005's THE BREAKTHROUGH. Blige enlisted a host of guest producers to contribute tracks to THE BREAKTHROUGH, and the result is one of her strongest ...
| | Isley Brothers Baby Makin' Music CD (2006)
Director
$10.89 The follow-up to the Isley's excellent 2003 album BODY KISS gives all indications that the legendary R&B outfit is still going strong some 50 years into its career. Decades before young, hip-hop-influenced urban contemporary singers were swinging and swaying their way into women's good graces, Ronald Isley was laying down the blueprint as the original mac crooner, and BABY MAKIN' MUSIC proves he's still got it.
Ronald's vocal delivery is as strong as ever: rich, emotional, and dripping with seduction. ...
| | Ne-Yo In My Own Words CD (2006)
Director
$11.09 The grooves on IN MY OWN WORDS are mostly down- to mid-tempo, with plenty of room to showcase Ne-Yo's way with a lyric and melody. The album's first single, "Stay," is a case in point, layering vocal lines for a choral effect while Ne-Yo's fine, flexible voice soars over the top. As one might expect, matters of the heart are the primary theme, but Ne-Yo proves that the market can handle another romantic neo-soul crooner, especially one this talented.
By the time of his Def Jam solo debut in 2006, Ne-Yo had already been a high-profile behind-the-scenes figure in contemporary ...
| | Bob Ostertag Verbatim CD (1998)
Director
$14.09 The American conceptual composer is widely known in avant-garde music circles for his work in sampling and computer music, and was one of the first artists to use computers and samplers in free improvisation during the '80s, often alongside John Zorn, Fred Frith Phil Minton, and the like. Additionally working in multimedia performance and solo computer compositions, his work is often devised with a political agenda to the fore, and, throughout the '90s, he made some of the most challenging and intellectually inspired experimental music coming out of the U.S.A. This CD is the third in a project entitled "Say No More," which was devised as a work for exploring and challenging the relationships between humans and technology. With this composition, Ostertag set out to link his computer composition to the free-form improvising of Drummer Gerry Hemmingway, vocalist Phil Minton, and bassist Mark Dresser. The trio performed improvisations that Ostertag recorded and sampled, making a new arrangement from ...
