Kenny Rogers may be the grand old man of country pop, but in the mid-1990s, he fell off the mainstream/major-label radar. He didn't stop making music, but his records didn't make the same big footprint anymore. Newly signed to Capitol, his "comeback" bid, WATER & BRIDGES, is a tasteful, mature outing. Full of wistful longing, it finds a 68-year-old Rogers in contemplative mode, inhabiting characters that look back on their bittersweet pasts with a mixture of regret and sanguinity.
There are no good-time romps a la "The Gambler," and no "Islands in the Stream"-like mega-pop productions, but WATER & BRIDGES is still a far cry from the starkness of Johnny Cash's latter-day outings. Those who've been enchanted in the past by Rogers's mellow, Nashville-meets-L.A. ballad style will find firm footing here. At the same time, the depth of the emotional content, and the obvious seriousness with which Rogers approached the making of the record, may endear him to those who dismissed his best-known songs as pop trifles. Not a reinvention, then, but a firm step forward, surprisingly late in the game, for this veteran balladeer.

There's no denying that Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn ruled the pop/country roost throughout the 1990s, but this second volume of Brooks & Dunn hits shows that the phenomenally successful duo kept chugging along well beyond their early-'90s heyday. It's mainly occupied by tracks from the late '90s and early 2000s, interspersed with a few new bonus cuts to keep the faithful on board. Those who've kept up with the twosome's career will be familiar with the ground covered by the hits, from the old-school barroom weeper "I'll Never Forgive My Heart" to the nostalgic Bob Seger-goes-to-Nashville country-rock title track of the duo's 2003 album, RED DIRT ROAD.

Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Cledus T. Judd is the Weird Al Yankovic of country music, a pillager of popular songs who rewrites their lyrics with a style short on taste and long on laughs. Judd has become a surprise hit with fans of the very artists whose songs he lampoons, and this album is bound to appeal to those who love contemporary country music but don't take it too seriously.
Among the country stars who get Cledusized are Shania Twain and Neal McCoy. Twain's "Any Man Of Mine" is transformed into the twisted ditty "If Shania Was Mine."
